About the Author K. D. Jones returned to his love for wooden boats first encountered as a child in the West Fork of the White River in Indiana after a career in aerospace. He lives with his wife, Barbara, near the Potomac in Virginia.

This is a great book.I have looked at lots of books about building a first boat and most of them lay out some fairly complicated procedures. As Mr. Jones mentions with some boat plans you'll spend as much on frames and stands etc as you will on the actual boat. With his method you get the basic info you need to build a presentable first boat for what should be a very small cost. There are no detailed plans, no lofting, no complicated procedures. I really think anyone who has a few common tools could use this book to build a boat. You can get almost all the material from your local lumber or big box store. Of course you need to want to build a flatiron skiff but that is a good starter boat.Kudos to Mr. Jones for keeping it simple.

I am an amateur woodworker who has never built anything with a curve in it. I am also an avid canoe/kayak river paddler who has always wanted to learn to sail the nearby Ohio River. I have begun building this skiff as a first sailboat and am enjoying the building process as clearly shown in the book. If I later decide to build a larger more complicated sailing boat I may buy plans and more detailed books or attend one of the many fine boatbuilding schools. But this book and this boat are the perfect first step, and very economical.
