About the Author LAURIE LEACH has had an eclectic dog training career. She has trained and raced sled dogs, competed in agility at the local and national level with multiple dogs, and taught classes for hundreds of future assistance dogs. Based on her experiences, Laurie came to believe that pups and dogs are both smarter and emotional than you might expect. She set out to design a program for stimulating and stretching puppy minds and has shared this program for raising a gifted puppy with many clients. Now this program is available to you. Laurie hopes that once you get started, you will find it impossible to conceive of teaching your puppy less. Laurie lives in Windsor, California.

The author herself states "I believe that every day our dogs spend with us is a gift. What I try to give back to them is a guarantee that their lives will be fun, stimulating, and challenging in appropriate ways". Even more than that, she also wants to make sure you have a GREAT relationship with your dog through understanding, communication, and fun learning games together. My wife is a veterinary tech and we have been exposed to many different training techniques and philosophies through the years of owning and caring for dogs. I love that the author emphasizes VERY positive techniques that will be effective toward building your relationship with your dog in addition to training them to be healthy, happy dogs.Things I especially like about this book:- 40 fun exercises/games that come in a very readable, concise, and easy to follow format- besides just what to do, explanations of why it is important, how dogs think, and explaining why things you might have thought you knew work or don't work- side boxes of real-life puppy training experiences and following an owner and her puppy through the program- side boxes of relating the exercises to "trainer-talk" you might encounter in live training classes or have heard elsewhere.- easy reference broken up in sections like relationship building, everyday behaviors, socialization and confidence building (oh so important!), and more- lots of resources listed in the back for additional information and furthering your involvement with your dog if you so desire- lots and lots of beautiful color photos of the cutest puppies ever!I actually think most of the training techniques in this book can be applied to older dogs as well, not just puppies. We are already looking at some of the exercises to work on some problem areas for our two and a half year old labrador as well. I am also purchasing another book to send to my son and his wife as they are recent owners of a rescue dog who is a bit on the shy side and could really benefit from these teachings... especially the socialization and confidence building. I am certain all these same games and exercises will be great for them to work on with their rescue dog!

Reading this book made me want to spend more time doing new things with my dogs and finding more ways of combining training with fun.The Gifted Puppy Program grew out of Laurie Leach’s dual career as a high school teacher by day and a dog trainer by night. As an educator, she was exposed to scientific studies which showed that students of all ability levels learn better when they are taught as if they are gifted children. She applied this concept to her work with dogs and found that the more puppies learn, the more they are capable of learning. She found that adult dogs, too, respond to positive training methods by learning to enjoy training challenges and becoming more confident.Laurie identifies the “Meet the Goblins” exercise in the chapter on Socialization and Confidence Building as the single most important activity in the book. This exercise teaches your pup that the world is a safe place by introducing him or her to a growing number of new people and unfamiliar objects, starting at the age of 8 weeks. There is a right way and a wrong way to socialize puppies and, as your puppy’s teacher, you want to get this one right. The “Socialization Plan” in the Appendix is helpful in this regard because it gives specific descriptions of the kinds of socialization activities that are appropriate for puppies at different ages in their early development.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Advice Horrible Kindle Publishing By Jeff White The book is easy to read and provides specific actionable advice for raising your new puppy. I particularly like that each game is numbered and stand on its own. This will allow us to refresh our memory on the specific game when our puppy reaches the right age. The only criticism of the book itself was that she provided almost no info or techniques on correcting negative behaviors. While I am completely on board with positive reinforcement there are times when correction is needed. She does provide a single paragraph on a technique to alert the dog that you don't want him barking.What I didn't like the book was the publishing for the Kindle version. The pictures at the beginning of the book were slightly grainy but the got increasingly bad the further I read. The techniques got more complicated and the author had pictures because but they were so small it was difficult to see what she was describing. Then the photos got really pixelated to the point you could tell there was a dog doing something but you could not make out the stance the trainer was in. Then the photos were not even there! The author would spend a section describing the proper technique and stance in the photo that was not there! There are 4 or 5 games that we won't be able to perform because it is impossible to understand without the photo. Buy the hard copy and skip the Kindle version.
