Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

They are mostly appropriate for all audiences, although at least one story mentioned domestic abuse as commonplace, so parents may wish to read the book over before sharing it. Although, the books are written with the proper use and syntax of 'thee' and 'thou,' which can be confusing, or feel archaic to the modern reader. There is an active table of contents, no illustrations, and some footnotes that are all properly linked to the end of their accompanying story.Contains the following tales:The Golden MountainMorozkoThe Flying ShipThe Muzhichek-as-Big-as-Your-Thumb...The Story of the Tsarevich Ivan, and the Harp...The Story of Gore-GorinskoeGo I Know Not Whither--Fetch I Know Not WhatKuz'ma SkorobogatyThe Tsarevna Loveliness-InexhaustibleVerliokaThe Frog-TsarevnaThe Two Sons of Ivan the SoldierThe Woman-AccuserThomas BerennikovThe White DuckThe Tale of Little Fool IvanThe Little Feather of Fenist...The Tale of the Peasant DemyanThe Enchanted RingThe Brave LabourerThe Sage DamselThe Prophetic DreamTwo Out of the KnapsackThe Story of Marko the Rich...

By Tom Rando This collection of classic Russian fairy-tales was first published in St. Petersburg in 1874 under the title народния русская Сказки, and was one of the first Russian volumes that attempted to immortalize these traditional Russian stories which were passed down from generation to generation. It features many well-known tales such as: The Golden Mountain, The Story of the Tsarevich Ivan, The White Duck, as well as many others. It is widely believed that this book did for Russian folklore what the Brothers Grimm did for German, and it remains a popular fairy-tale book even today. In the process of trying to record these stories, Bain also managed to capture the very essence of Russian culture and personified it through these charming, violent, crazy, and otherwise extreme stories. As I began to read through this book, I was uncertain as to whether or not I would like it, considering the age of the book and the fact that it was a fairytale book. But I immediately found myself immersed in this collection of entertaining and interesting tales. From talking animals that assist and guide the characters to tsars offering immeasurable treasures for completing various tasks, every story is extremely different, yet equally enjoyable. My personal favorite was easily “The Muzhichek-as-big-as-your-thumb-with-mustaches-seven-versts-long.” This story began with a tsar who wanted someone to obtain a horse he saw in his dreams. One mysterious person claimed that the horse could in fact be found and sent his three sons to find it for the tsar in exchange for his daughter and half his tsar-dom. As the story would go, one of the sons would help a mystical creature which would help him get the horse for the tsar, and the son would live happily ever after. There are though a few things though to consider before attempting to read through these stories. Firstly, these tales were translated into a style of Old-English which, at times, can be somewhat rough to understand. But despite the difficulties I encountered, these stories proved to be timeless and was well worth it. Another point to consider is the nature of some of the stories. Unlike the fairy-tales that are often depicted through Disney movies, Russian fairy-tales often do not have happy endings and include often abusive treatment of women and animals. One story in particular, “the Woman-Accuser,” featured a man who resented how his woman spoke out and would often punish her severely for doing so and as a modern American reader, it can be hard to imagine a world in which these sentiments were not foreign. Finally, the themes and characters of these stories are rarely that of what we consider to be traditional. Some themes include: “there is always an easier way out,” “let others help you,” and “good things happen to those who do nothing,” and more often than not, the characters of these stories are very flawed, usually bad with money, frequently stupid, and otherwise lazy. This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in this aspect of Russian culture. These stories will keep you entertained with every page and you will often find yourself laughing and perplexed at the absurdity of some of these tales!
