100 Greatest Women on Coins is the 10th entry in Whitman Publishing's popular "100 Greatest" library. "This book is a celebration of women's impact on numismatics," says award-winning author Ron Guth. Each notable woman is described with an illustrated essay and colorful images of the coins on which she appears. Guth also discusses the long history of women featured on coins, and how anyone today can assemble a remarkable and meaningful collection. The book's scholarly value is further expanded with a checklist for the specialist, and bibliography for further research.

More than 700 queens, princesses, empresses, actresses, political and religious leaders, goddesses, and other women were up for consideration. They were voted on and ranked by members of Women in Numismatics to determine the 100 Greatest Women on Coins. The 100 Greatest Women on Coins include real women such as Cleopatra, Martha Washington, and Elena Aladova; goddesses such as Athena, Demeter, and Nike; allegorical women (who represent and idea or nationality) such as Miss Liberty, Mother Earth, and Britannia; and women in art, such as La Pietà and Auguste Renoir's Girls at the Piano. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on billions of coins during her reign. Queen Victoria was featured on copper, silver, and gold coins throughout her 64-year rule, the longest of any British monarch. These real women are joined by mythical women like Angels; monstrous women like Medusa; caretakers like Mother Teresa and Florence Nightingale; women from art and fiction, like Heidi and Anne of Green Gables; famous Americans like Dolley Madison and Marilyn Monroe; and other royals like Princess Diana and Queen Nefertiti.

"100 Greatest Women on Coins is a celebration of the hundreds of women who have appeared on coins from ancient times to the present," says author Ron Guth. "This is a book about mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, empresses, queens, ballerinas, athletes, goddesses, regents, allegorical figures, and the many forms in which women have appeared on coins. It's the story of women who have made important contributions to history, politics, the arts, the sciences, and myriad other fields."

The coins on which the 100 Greatest Women appear include valuable gold and silver pieces, unusual commemoratives, and super-rarities, as well as more common pieces that you can find in your pocket change.

The book includes a foreword by Charmy Harker, president of Women in Numismatics and a noted coin dealer, who calls it "a fascinating look into the important role women have played throughout numismatic history and throughout history in general."

Review This intriguing coffee-table volume should find a welcome place in the homes of numismatists of both genders. --Coinage Yearbook, Winter 2016, by Mike Thorne

From the Inside Flap This is the tenth entry in Whitman Publishing's popular "100 Greatest" library. Award-winning author Ron Guth has studied coins depicting women from ancient times to the modern day, building a database of more than 700 queens, princesses, empresses, actresses, political and religious leaders, goddesses, and others. These were voted on and ranked by members of Women in Numismatics and other hobbyists to determine the 100 Greatest Women on Coins. "This book is a celebration of women's impact on numismatics," says Guth, "and a study of the relationship between them and the men who monopolize the portraiture designed for coins." Each notable woman is described with an illustrated historical, biographical, and anecdotal essay and colorful images of the coins on which she appears. Guth also discusses the long history of women featured on coins, and how anyone today can assemble a remarkable and meaningful collection. The book's scholarly value is further expanded with a checklist for the specialist, and a bibliography for further research.

About the Author Neil S. Berman: Neil S. Berman has been an expert numismatist and professional rare coin dealer since 1968. Coming back to the United States from Israel at the end of 1967, he apprenticed to the world-renowned Dutch numismatist and coin auctioneer Hans M. F. Schulman. He incorporated as Neil S. Berman, Inc., in 1968. In 1974, Neil became an associate of Metropolitan Rare Coin Company of New York. For the next several years, he represented Arthur and Donald Kagin of Des Moines, Iowa, then the largest coin dealer in the Midwest, as a purchasing agent. Later he represented Superior Galleries under the Goldbergs, also as a purchasing agent. In 1979, Neil, with his brother Jed, founded First Federal Coin Company, the first East Coast coin company to sell rare coins into IRA, Keogh, and pension plans. From 1983 until 1990, he was the purchasing agent for Asset Services, Inc., the largest coin company serving the financial community. Neil donated his large collection of German and Swiss silver minor coins to the American Numismatic Society (ANS) in 1989. In 1997, he received the American Numismatic Association (ANA) Service Award from ANA President David Ganz. In 2005 and 2006, he was associated again with Superior Galleries of Beverly Hills, this time under the ownership of numismatist Silvano DiGenova. Neil catalogued the U.S. gold in the 1977 Kagin's ANA Coin Auction Sale, the first New York coin auction sale in 1981 of Spink and Sons, England's oldest and largest coin dealer, and a coin auction sale by Superior Rare Coin Galleries of Beverly Hills in 2006. Neil has been published in "Barron's, Trusts & Estates, The National Law Journal, The Financial Planner, Pensions World," and"Executive Jeweler." In 1987, he wrote, with Hans Schulman, "The Investor's Guide to United States Coins," which sold 40,000 copies and received a Numismatic Literary Guild award for Best Investment Book. In 2007, he wrote the second edition of the book with Silvano DiGenova. Neil has just completed a book on rare coin auctions.

Ron Guth: Ron Guth is a jack-of-all-trades and master of one -- numismatics. Ron is a certified public accountant (CPA), a licensed auctioneer, and a writer, but the bulk of his time is spent on his true love -- coin collecting and dealing. Ron's battle with coin fever began when he was 12 years old, and he's never gotten over it. After a decade of collecting, Ron went professional in 1976, when he began working for a local coin shop in Tampa, Florida. In 1978, he partnered with David Goldsmith and purchased the Bay Area Coin Exchange in Tampa. Ron and Dave blasted through the silver boom, and then split up in 1981, when Ron moved to Evansville, Indiana (his wife's hometown), where he set up shop on First Avenue. In 1984, Ron formed Mid-American Rare Coin Auctions with Jeff Garrett of Lexington, Kentucky. The company quickly established itself as an innovative leader in the industry and, within the first year, became the fifth largest rare coin auction company in America. In 1988, Ron sold his interest in the company, went back to school to finish his bachelor's degree in accounting and finance, and has since become a numismatic consultant and a major dealer in German coins. In 1984, Ron won the American Numismatic Association's Wayte and Olga Raymond and Heath Literary awards. He has written many coin-related articles and is listed as a contributor toseveral books, including "Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States Coins," Krause Publications's "Standard Catalog of German Coins," Roger S. Cohen's "American Half Cents, Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents," and others.

By Passionate Hobbyist Of the 100 Greatest series of books by Whitman, this (along with the one on tokens and medals) is my favorite. It travels across so many different times and cultures, taking the reader along for the journey, and makes one really think about the varied ways that women have been depicted on coins. Some are depicted as a generalized Liberty, others are more specific. The methodology for selecting which included a wide range of collectors including the group Women in Numismatics (which is a wonderful group to check out with a great journal) worked to create a broad list that should prove interesting to collectors and non-collectors alike. As to be expected with these types of coffee table books, the pictures are gorgeous. I've picked up a few at shows to give as gifts and they've been well received.

This book has a great selection of women in history on coins, each of whom has cultural signifance. I particularly recommend this book for coin lovers, history buffs and literature nerds like myself.

Speaking as someone who has no experience in coin collecting, this book is very educational in regards to the history surrounding each of the 100 women chosen. I love to read about history, and not surprisingly, books mostly focus on accomplishments from men (right now I'm also reading a book about the Wright brothers). It was refreshing to read a book highlighting the role women have had in history. Even with the women I had already heard of, there always seemed to be a small tidbit added that I had not previously known. Regardless of whether you are a coin collector or not, the photos of the coins are top notch, as if you can just pick them up from the pages.
