Flash's Song: How One Small Dog Turned into One Big Miracle, by Kay Pfaltz

Review “From the author of Lauren’s Story: An American Dog in Paris, comes another beautiful tale of the power of love and the healing against all odds. [Flash's] Song speaks not only to the power of love and the human heart in healing, but also to the connection between humans and animals. This is a beautiful memoir, whose insights into dogs, love and the intangible connection to all life will keep you turning the pages and lift your heart.”—Dr. Marty Becker, “America’s Veterinarian”"This is a very unusual and very beautiful book because it is filled with both heart and wisdom. Reading the story of Flash and Kay is like having a conversation with life. The rewards for the reader are similar to the lessons learned from our painful life experiences. But Kay and Flash's story make it less painful, while at the same time enriching our lives and making them more meaningful."—Bernie Siegel, MD, author of The Art of Healing and A Book of Miracles"In my opinion, Kay Pfaltz is brilliant: as an author, as a human being—one who fully understands what it means to be love, the deepest, most expansive kind that includes all life. She is an artist of the highest moral and spiritual ranking. Flash's Song is magnificent, beautifully written from the Heart of Love within all, skillfully presented with a perfect combination of wisdom and humor. This is a book to keep close, return to often and give to everyone you care about." —Rita M. Reynolds, author of Blessing the Bridge and Ask the Cow"I have admired Kay's writing for so many years—what a gift she has for helping us connect to animals and see and feel the beauty and wonder they bring into our lives. Like Lauren's Story, Flash's Song is a gem, not to be missed. If you have ever loved an animal, you will feel a kinship with Kay as she so beautifully describes that precious gift of unconditional love that they give us. If you have ever grieved the loss of an animal friend, Kay understands the depth of that loss."—Judy Carman, author of Peace to All Beings: Veggie Soup for the Chicken's Soul"I found that reading Flash's Song before going to bed was very soothing. This is a beautiful book, profound in its simplicity and love. This is a book that brings great comfort and perhaps the real miracles are within its magical pages."—Judy Nelson, author of Choices and Love Match

I'm a dog lover, but my preference has always been big dogs. Flash was a dachshund. Nevertheless, Flash stole my heart from the beginning to end.I expected a good-read dog story, but what I got was so much more. The author, Kay Pfaltz, takes us on a journey of the soul, her soul and, by extension your own soul, for lack of a better word. The crux of the story is about Flash, who is diagnosed with a tumor on his spine, turning Kay's world upside down--the stress, fear and pain anyone knows at some point who lives long enough with an animal companion. From here, two stories begin. One is about Flash and the remedies Kay tries to alleviate his suffering. The other is about her belief that he can and will heal and how that shapes both of their lives. It's a journey to greater wisdom and love, and Kay shows this very palpably through her story and some patches of very beautiful, lyrical writing. Kay writes of the miracles that transpired during her time of crisis with Flash, speaking in lay terms and humbly laying bare her faults and insecurities. Flash's Song a beautiful, endearing, enriching story that feels as if written 100% from the heart, and I am so in love with Flash. A book to keep by the bedside if feeling down.

It is a loving and heartfelt tribute to author Kay Pfaltz's beloved Dachshund, Flash, a little dog with a huge heart of gold. Flash came into Kay's life while she was still grieving the loss of Lauren, her cherished Beagle and soul mate. All that Kay knew about young Flash's previous life was that he had been dumped from a car at the side of the road. From the moment Kay took Flash home they became a family (a family that would later include two Beagle-mix "sisters"). Kay's love for Flash radiated from every page of the book in the tender way she recounted their life together. When Flash was 13 years old, he was diagnosed with a tumor on his spine and given only 3 weeks, at most, to live. Kay had always been open to alternative means of healing the body and mind and now sought such treatments for Flash, hoping such methods would give them more quality time together. And it did! The ending of this book was especially beautiful. Kay's sensitive retelling of the last days of Flash's life, as he witnessed the first flowers of spring (which he "helped" her plant!)for the last time, and how Kay will always remember holding Flash's tiny body in her arms on his last Easter were truly emotional. After getting to know Flash through this book, I can't help but smile whenever I think of him. "Flash's Song" is a wonderful and inspiring book, reminding readers to keep their hearts open to the power that love and miracles have in healing. After reading "Flash's Song", check out "Lauren's Story - An American Dog in Paris" also by Kay Pfaltz. Another book for dog lovers who don't see their dog as "just a dog" but as a cherished family member. Both books have left an everlasting impact on my being.

It is also a departure from Kay's first book about her beloved beagle Lauren. This book stars Flash, a miniature dachshund, who is diagnosed, in his thirteenth year of life, with a tumor growing rapidly on his spine. From here a journey of health and healing, as well as revelation begins. While no one has mentioned this fact, I saw within the pages of this beautiful book, that Flash was healing Kay as much as Kay was `healing' Flash. Kay never attempts to say that she was the one who healed him; in fact quite the opposite. She only suggests she opened her heart, let go and let the universe do the work.Flash comes alive in the beginning chapters as a feisty and brave little smooth-haired dachshund, afraid of nothing...on the outside. But there is an emotional depth to little Flash and when he falls ill, unable to use his hind legs, we feel his confusion and pain deeply. As he heals, first walking then running, we rejoice with both him and Kay, and his two beagle sisters, in their small family of four.Flash's Song is a story about the courage to confront the adversities we all encounter; it is about love, both human and canine, and the strength love gives us to go on. This is a book that dares to be deeply vulnerable and honest. I hope Flash's Song will help inspire people to respond to the difficult events in their own lives with acceptance and grace. Reading it each night felt to me like, as Kay says, "the comfort of my morning cup of tea," because there is a gentleness in its pages. There is also a lot of love and there is hope. Beautifully written, Flash's Song is a must read for anyone seeking a humble, enlightened life filled with love.
