A Nice Read and Great Introduction to this Historical Drama By Scott Cole The negative first: for the price I wish there was a little more content but after reading the book I have no complaints and look forward to Part Two.In the back of my mind I've always realized that the Spanish conquest was a fascinating and tragic drama with far reaching consequences in world history; it is just that I have never devoted much thought or time to study that period. This book has really piqued my interest.LaFond's book is a mix of excerpts from Bernal Diaz's account, plus LaFond's commentary which gives the reader greater insight into what Diaz was describing.Finally, the appendices account for about a fourth of the book and consist of book reviews of various key works for those wishing to explore the topic further. Once I post this review I'll be buying Conquistador by Buddy Levy on the strength of LaFond's review.
