Following her story from failed auditions to major stage success and all the day jobs in between, Courtney uses her ten years of field research as a New York City actor to unpack what it takes to make it in any creative career. The First Ten Years isn’t selling success to the reader. It is selling the reader to the reader. The Day Job Complex, Following Your Sadness and Why No One Likes a Perfectionist are just a few sections that address the very real inner battles that creatives (from actors to entrepreneurs) fight when facing a blank canvas. Pulling those silent soap operas into the open exposes creative turmoil for what it is: an unnecessary block to our greatest work. Blending anecdotes, creative philosophy and practical tips, each chapter ends with a set of questions designed to push the reader to uncover his or her own creative philosophy -- the philosophy that will ultimately serve as a guide toward the reader’s own creative longevity and fortitude.

It’s accessible, non-condescending, meets-you-on-your-own-terms advice. Actually, scratch that. It’s not even advice. It’s meeting you in the middle to hash out the challenging, rewarding, spontaneous, impossible, beautiful parts of being an artist. Courtney’s story is so personal and relatable it’s as if she’s speaking directly to each individual reader. She has the astounding ability to find the exact right words to describe the life of a creative. Any creative. That includes accountants, lawyers, doctors. Everyone has creativity within him or her; it doesn’t need to be manifested through traditional “art.” We are all going on this journey together and individually.Your potential is there within you and ready to be cracked open, and Courtney is there to remind you of that on every page. If you’re looking for inspiration or a kick in the butt to get creating, then I highly encourage you to buy/read this book. If you’re not looking for inspiration or a kick in the butt, then I STILL encourage you to buy/read this book because it will help get you back on track and get you in touch with what you have to offer to the world. I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the book:“I can’t tell you where you should go or who you should be or what mark you will make on this world. But I can definitively tell you this:You have something more to give. The world is waiting for that one thing that can only come from you.You know how to give it.”

By Abby Woodhouse With an in-depth goal of empowering the world’s creatives, Courtney brings readers into her own life, showing them her own struggles and successes. She is an incredibly endearing narrator, one who is easy to listen to, one who you trust. And as the book gets on, this trust deepens and she begins to ask you to reflect, to be vulnerable, to embrace failure.I wish I could say more, but truly all I can say is this: READ. THIS. BOOK. You will thank me later.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. authentic, courageous, wakeful By Brigitte With fierce authenticity and immeasurable courage, Courtney Romano delivers deep truths about the process of creating. The First Ten Years makes a space for you to meet yourself anew. We, as the readers, get to accompany Romano in her journey of waking to herself and her power to create. Humility and humor and gratitude run through her storytelling. Romano supports us with questions about what lives behind the act of creation. The book’s structure allows us to breathe with Romano; the chapters offer a beautiful, firm architecture for the book. Even the organization of the book’s paragraphs and bullet points give the book a rhythmic and almost musical quality. Everything feels chosen and purposeful and connected. After reading, you might feel as though you collaborated with Romano, because her honesty and ability to empower others in their work infuses each moment. Unlike other books of its kind, The First Ten Years considers the whole picture in a very alive way. You will not be guided to external goals. You will be invited to look inward, and by asking the right questions, you will begin to chart, redefine, unveil, awaken, write, play, sing, and share with purpose.
