This significant catalog is a highly detailed look at the world’s most celebrated collection of red and white quilts. Like the Log Cabin or Baltimore-style, the red and white quilt is a hugely popular genre of quilting. Colorfast Turkey red dye became readily available in the mid-nineteenth century, so red and white quilts became extremely popular, due not only to the newness of the color but also because of the extremely vibrant and punchy contrasting color scheme. Featuring over 650 quilts from the past three centuries, this book is filled with the gorgeous and imaginative designs of feathered stars, diamonds, animals, oak leaves, baskets, lettering, and snowflakes, as well as fascinating examples of careful embroidery and appliqué. With inspiring handiwork, designs, and visual histories, this book exemplifies the sheer magnitude and poetry of red and white quilts and is a staple compendium of this beloved art form.

The quality is very high with beautiful photos of many, many red and white quilts. No complaints there but it's just photos. There's no information on any of the quilts other than the dimensions. I understand that provenance is hard to come by on antique quilts and, in the case of quilts made with solid fabrics rather than prints, even coming up with an estimated date is nearly impossible but I would like to have seen some information about the quilts. Hand or machine pieced? What's the quilting like? Were there any unusual techniques or unexpected touches? Signatures? Designs that are typical to one area or another? Is there anything that makes a given quilt unique or surprising? Page after page of beautiful photographs - and they are very beautiful - is like an all dessert buffet that leaves you full but not really satisfied. I soon began to crave information to go along with the pretty pictures.I wish I'd been able to see the original exhibit. I think seeing all these quilts so spectacularly displayed would have more than made up for the lack of information on individual quilts. As it is, after the first few pages, I found myself paging through fairly rapidly and losing interest as I went. If you're looking for a photo album of the exhibit, this is a great book. If you want something more than pretty pictures, look elsewhere.

It is NOT a quilt pattern book, but it is definitely a book of inspiration.About 4 years ago, there was a quilt exhibit in NYC in conjunction with Joanna Rose and the American Folk Art Museum. 653 red and white quilts were put on display. All the of the quilts are from Mrs. Rose's personal collection. The exhibit was a birthday gift from her husband. (Just sayin...she's a lucky lady for at least 2 reasons.) 350 pages of red and white quilts and the story of how the exhibit came to be.

I have been praying for such a momentous of this fabulous exhibit and since having the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Rose while there, with a great group of quilting friends who came for the day on a bus, from Virginia. That day was a highlight of my life. And here I sit, tears streaming down my face, turning page after page of a book that was more than I could have hoped for. Thank you. Like my memories, I shall cherish this precious book.
