1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Really useful guide By Amazon Reader Jim says that belonging as social creatures, we need to feel that we are a part of a group or groups. This is first addressed in our family. Later, we branch out into groups formed from peers and/or interests. He then addresses how all of those factors are important in our development.I really like how Jim approaches the concept of self esteem. He gets to the bottom of it by breaking self esteem issues down in small parts and then he addresses each and every part thoroughly.I started to read this book more or less on behalf of someone else to see how I could help this person along. What struck me when I was reading this book is that, as I was reading, I realised that I could use some help myself in the area of self esteem. It is obvious that Jim is an experienced counselor who has a good grasp on how to successfully resolve issues of low self esteem.What grabbed me is his summation of what love is. ‘Love is more than an emotional reaction to another person. It is the summation of all the ways in which we act and react to one another.’ Amen to that. Really useful guide for anyone who struggles with self image issues.

A single question asked by a very good friend changed my life forever. "Are you happy?" My automatic answer was "Yes! I'm always happy." This was the person others saw, the person I was expected to be. That one question haunted me for months and it took some deep inward searching to understand why. I discovered that I wasn't happy, I'd settled into a routine in which I floated on the whim of those around me, adjusting my course around others' desires and actions. My most difficult and life changing decision was to end this cycle and to become self-aware.We've all been shaped by others who have also been shaped by others. By Wendy Higdon In The Formula for Christian Self Esteem, the author explains the differences between self esteem and self image. As a counselor myself, he did a really nice job of explaining how self image is formed by the value others place on us, whether positively or negatively, without judgment. He uses his life story to illustrate his message.He delves into how his low self image affected his time and task management, self care, his relationships, and his spiritual up's and down's.He also looks at attempts to fix the problem through books, workshops, counseling, prayer, service, affirmation, mastery, and relationships.In his chapters on The Importance of Love and Loving and Being Loved, he describes the immense need we have to be loved and to love and feel appreciated by those around us. The how-to-change happens in Pat III: The Formula. Don't miss it! A book well worth reading!
