My 8 year old told me that he desperately desired to own it, and I indulged him. We have a number of big coffee table style Lego books and I as expecting it to be similar - I was wrong! This is not an oversized book, it is on the smaller side. It has a number of historically significant events with nicely done little Lego illustration spreads next to them. My son is quite engrossed in reading the history AND soaking in the gorgeous pictures, and I call that a win. Very enjoyable little book.

This is first and foremost a history book, written in a simple easy to read style. It doesn't get bogged down in a dry details, but paints broad brushstrokes for the medieval period in England. This is not a Lego building or plans book. It serves as inspiration. People that love to build Legos built different scenes for each section of the book. Some of these scenes are really complicated and beautiful. I'd love to see the models in person. The remarkable part, each builder took their own pictures and there is a consistency of view and lighting throughout the book. The text is incredibly well written. A number of English history scholars wrote essays. Somehow the essays ended up with a common tone. It was as if only one person wrote the whole book. The paper is thick and the book is expertly bound. The photographs are reproduced beautifully. My only minor complaint is the text layout - the spacing between paragraphs is too wide, making it look like the essays are divided across the page. These are remarkable Lego models accompanied with well written English history.

The large, full color photos of Lego scenes are so much fun to look at. It's really impressive how creative the author is in recreating each story in Lego form. Each time I look at this book, I see something new. My 10 year old is a huge Lego fan and is a very talented builder himself. Even though there aren't instructions for building these scenes, my son has a knack for figuring out how to recreate elements that appeal to him. I love that we can all enjoy the Lego scenes in this book while my little Lego fan is able to take an even deeper appreciation of it. You can see the wheels turning when he looks through Medieval Lego and know he is planning his next build.Second, the stories here are really interesting and appeal to a wide age range. They are all well written (by a variety of historical experts) and accessible for all of us, kids and adults. My 16 year old enjoys history and is familiar with more historical details than you'd expect, but she still found a lot of new things in this book. We've had a really good time reading the stories, which cover quite a large time period but are only a couple of pages each.Whether you appreciate history or Lego or both, Medieval Lego is a delight.
