About the Author Ian Wardropper has been director of The Frick Collection since 2011. Previously, he was Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Chairman of the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Eloise W. Martin Curator and Department Head, European Decorative Arts and Sculpture and Ancient Art, at the Art Institute of Chicago. He has written numerous books and articles and co-organized more than twenty exhibitions in his specialties of European sculpture, earlier decorative arts, and twentieth-century design and decorative arts, among them Cast in Bronze: French Sculpture from Renaissance to Revolution (2009), and Art of the Royal Court: Treasures in Pietre Dure for the Palaces of Europe (2008). In 2012, he received the prestigious Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France.He has lectured widely and made a number of radio and TV appearances. Most recently, he gave a tour of the Frick to Mario Batali, for the chef’s series “The High Road”; appeared on Channel 13 to feature a sculpture by Jean-Antoine Houdon; and discussed the exhibition Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Hals at The Frick Collection on NY1.Julia Day is associate conservator at The Frick Collection. In 2011, she completed the treatment of Houdon's life-sized painted terracotta sculpture Diana the Huntress in preparation for its installation in the new Portico Gallery. In 2012, she presented her work on The Frick Collection at two symposia: the French Bronze Symposium in Paris, and the ICOM-CC Enamel Group meeting in Barcelona, where she spoke about her treatment of Limoges painted enamels and the renovation of the Enamel Room's historic display cases.

About the Author Kaseorg, born in Pennsylvania in 1956, studied art and writing at Binghamton University, and became a professional artist early in her career. She went on to graduate school at USC Los Angeles where she studied Occupational Therapy. She owned her own Occupational Therapy practice for many years in NY, and with the birth of her prodigiously gifted first son, began homeschooling. She has bicycled across the USA, run a marathon, completed a biathalon, learned to ski at age 50, successfully graduated her three children to prestigious universities, yet still feels the most difficult task she has ever had to accomplish "is living a consistent, righteous life before God and my family."

Also a voice speaking from your own childhood, the voice from inside your very own head, that said there wasn't much you could do, you're just a little kid, and yet you wanted to try. While Vicky works hard at changing Gidget's destiny, her own is molded by the sheer force of her will and the kindness in her heart. She finds a way to forgive the flighty horse, her own timid self, her rival for a paramour's affection, and a seemingly uncaring God who allowed a little child's heart to be broken. In fact in the story perhaps Vicky learns more than the horse does in the end. A great second installment in this hopefully many chaptered series! Can't wait for what comes next.

Vicky saves another horse, the horse farm, and helps hurting children. What more could you ask for? The Christian world view is a bonus without being preachy or taking over the story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I really enjoyed this book By J. Benner I really enjoyed this book, the second in a series about a girl who works and rides at a horse stable. Part fiction but part fact, the story rings true to any of us who have loved horses as a teen and were willing to do any dirty job to be near them. Horse lovers and animal lovers alike will both enjoy Gidget as well as Joe. As Vicky grows and learns about horses you truly find yourself rooting for her to do well. The obligatory love interest/bully is also ringing true for me. Who didn't fall in love with a boy at a stable? Vicky is just a way better sport about his insults than I ever was. I found myself reading longer and faster to see what would happen, and when I hit the end I said "what?" it's done? I read it in an e book format so I didn't realize I was that close. Now this can be a stand alone book but you really were left with the sense "and then what happened?" as if Vicky were sitting at your table telling you this story. Add to all this that it is a clean book so no language to bog you down, and the Christian message is quite clear. I am anxiously awaiting book 3 in the series.

26 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Rich hipster weddings abound... By JoleneRae I bought this book in the hopes of getting some beautiful ideas for my upcoming wedding. Sadly, what I got was a bad case of the "are you freaking kidding me?"s. This book has gorgeous photos but in no way is it a step-by-step of the wedding process or even of the design process at the title would suggest. Not to mention every wedding in the book had to have cost a small fortune. Don't get me wrong, I know weddings are expensive and the more stunning and unique a feat, the more it seems to cost. But that isn't an excuse to display a three-day affair at which a couple rents out an entire hotel, hosts a cocktail party, breakfast bash, pool party and dance party all before the wedding and reception. I also want to point out that all of the weddings in this book look incredibly similar despite each bride saying they wanted something unique. Maybe it was the use of the same flowers or the pervasive presences of "rustic" design elements (old suitcases, metal pails as part of the center pieces, wooden boxes for the center pieces, wooden frames to hold the menus, family style dining with 'interesting' chairs...) and basically every wedding used the same caterer. I understand that this book is about weddings designed by a specific event planning team and so similarities should be expected.With all of the above said, if you are looking for a book to help you find wedding inspiration, unless you have more money than God, are lucky to not have to pay for your own wedding or are some quasi-hipster obsessed with being unique and individual but really just want a cookie-cutter rustic and whimsical affair, don't waste your money on this book.

I really liked the little color schemes and interviews they had with the couples. I could really identify with each couple's take on things, and I think it was really neat to see their vision for their wedding transformed into the gorgeous images. The book definitely did not disappoint!

By Dimitrios This book almost smells of another long bygone era. The writer was a British captain of the Indian Cavalry in Mesopotamia and during a mission to sabotage the Turkish telegraph lines near Baghdad in late 1914, his little plane suffered damage and he was caught together with his pilot. He spent the next four years in various Turkish prisons, first at Baghdad, then in Iraq, after that at Afion Karahisar in central Anatolia and finally in Constantinople. He describes his life as a prisoner of the Turks with humor, pride and a heavy dose of philosophical attitude sometimes. He had a keen eye not only for his surroundings but also for the Turks themselves, their habbits and national characteristics, the various people then living within the realm of the decaying Ottoman Empire, and of course his two attempts to escape. The Turks of 1914-18 could be both extremely brutal towards their low rank captives but also friendly and tolerant towards British officers, turning the imprisonment of their enemies into a profitable business since they allowed the British officers to receive money checks from home, buy their own food and even do shopping excursions in the nearby city! After spending some years in captivity, the author found out that his transfer to a Constantinople prison would offer him the best chance for an escape, and he managed not only to reach the Turkish capital but also to contact a charming and very clever British young lady who provided valuable help to British POWs. This is a very nice small book, although it was not meant to be a serious history of World War I in Mesopotamia but rather an adventure read for a young British audience of that era. It contains no maps but only two sketches of the author's escape attempts and also two photographs of his funny and very good disguises.

This book answered to all the questions I had in mind. But, the part I really enjoyed was the reference to the small Bonsai trees. I always wondered about the way you take care of the little trees and the right technique you must apply. At the end, this book makes you realize how important the Japanese culture, the symbols, with an artistic way, in gardening are.

Living in the subtropics in south Florida, traditional gardening books rarely (if ever) address our climate. Many traditional fruits just don't grow well, or at all, in this area. David's book is an EXCELLENT resource for all sorts of edibles. Unlike non-Floridian gardeners, he understands the differences between growing in the northern half of the state versus the southern, and gives suggestions for BOTH areas. I was delighted to read about all sorts of plants I had never considered before. Many of them I had never even heard of. The book is geared a bit more towards the northern part of the state, but I definitely found enough for my area to make the purchase worthwhile.All in all, this is a great reference book for growing in Florida. My food forest is started! :-)

By artsymom234 Dabling in gardening, planted a few fruit trees... how do you make if all work together and not increase your work load taking care of all the yard work? Your answers lie within! My husband was thinking I was crazy spending more and more time in the yard even in the blazing hot Florida summers. I had my heart set on future yeilds from my garden and newly planted fruit trees. After a while I started to realize this was getting to be a lot of work and there had to be a better way. Working with nature instead of against it. David clearly lays out where to begjn to develop your very own food forest which operates almost on auto-pilot after you get the groundwork done. Whether you are starting on a small scale or go whole hog and turn your yard into a jungle producing loads of food with minimal work, this book contains loads of great info presented in a humorous and passonate way. I highly recommend it!

By iiiireader I am blown away by the wonderful projects included in this book. I have a grandchild on the way and another one who is still a toddler and I was looking for a set of projects that I could accomplish fairly quickly while using up some of the extra skeins of yarn I have."One-Skein Wonders for Babies" is exactly the book I wanted and needed. I wasn't aware of this series of books, but apparently this is the six edition in the series. I will certainly be purchasing the others (I see one is crochet, too!)The projects are by many different designers and range from clothing to blankets to toys and lots of other fun stuff in-between. The chapter titles tell it all:1. Little Ensembles2. Little Tops3. Little Bottoms4. Little Dresses5. Little Hats6. Little Socks and Bootees7. Little Accessories8. Little Blankets9. Little Toys10. Little MiscellanyEach chapter has many different entries, so there is a wide range of projects to chose from. I really like that there are patterns for items for girls and boys and those which are gender neutral. My toddler grandchild is a boy but the baby-on-the-way is not yet known, so I will start with a gender neutral matching pair for the two of them.The projects are well-laid out with comprehensive directions. I am a much stronger crocheter than knitter but I think I can tackle any one of these projects and get them done well. Each pattern includes the size(s) the pattern can make, the type actually used and amount of yarn needed, needles used, gauge, and extra supplies you will need. This makes it simple to follow along, or if you prefer, to swap out for the yarn that you have on-hand.The photographs in the book are outstanding and make each project a joy to behold. The back of the book has general directions for knitting information and additionally, lists the designers for the various items. This is great if you are really like a particular style and want to see if the designer has additional patterns available that might suit your taste.I received a digital ARC copy of this book from the publisher, Storey Publishing, LLC, via Netgalley. I have also purchased a hard-copy to have in my library and to use often.

Nice book By Chinook I haven't made anything from the book since I just recently purchased it but I've looked through it and am pleased with the variety of projects offered. It has more options that I realized when I ordered it which is always a good thing! I'm looking forward to knitting a few of the hats and sweaters.

And who doesn't love a project that requires just one skein?But my Kindle copy was garbage.Kept throwing me out of where I was to take me back to almost the end of the book. Kept skipping pages which made it all but impossible to follow a pattern with confidence.If you knit directly from your kindle fire I don't recommend.

A towering 18th-century rabbinic leader who is best known for his halakhic responsa collection the Noda biyehudah, Landau is generally considered a staunch opponent of esoteric practices and public kabbalistic discourse. About the Author Sharon Flatto is Associate Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in the Department of Judaic Studies at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, specializing in early modern Jewish history, early modern and modern Jewish thought, and kabbalah. Her research interests include mysticism in early modern Prague; early Hasidism; and the modernization of east and central European rabbinic culture. Professor Flatto received her Ph.D. in Jewish history from Yale University, after which she held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Brown University. She has taught at Yale University, Queens College, Brown University, and Brooklyn College. The recipient of many awards and grants, she has contributed to learned journals and written articles for the YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe.

Story of a Drab Era By Michael Lewyn The first half of this book focuses on Jewish life in 18th-century Prague, and the second half focuses on Rabbi Ezekiel Landau's interest in kabbalism (Jewish mysticism). R. Landau, the Chief Rabbi of Prague, was a brilliant man most known for writing lots and lots of responsa (rulings on Jewish law). Landau and other Prague rabbis favored ascetic practices such as lots and lots of fasting (even on the Sabbath!), often based on kabbalah. Reading this made me realize how grim life must have been in that place and time; although there were no major massacres of Jews, they faced oppressive taxation, government rules that forced many Jews out of Prague, and a rabbinate whose major interest was to tell them to be as miserable and to fear the afterlife. No wonder Jews flocked to all manner of unusual movements, both the heretical (such as the false messiah Sabbatai Zevi and the sex-obsessed Jacob Frank) and the more moderate (such as the Hasidim, who also spread mysticism but were a bit less puritanical than the mainstream rabbinate).

Too repetitive for me though, not all of them are repeating but the ones that I wanted to color were a lot alike..Its a thin book, I just expected something harder not just a flimsy cover.
