About the Author Dr. Julia Riede is a nuclear physicist in love with her knitting needles. She has been taught how to knit by her grandmother in her early childhood in Austria and never stopped since. After many years of following knitting patterns of others, she finally decided to start creating her own back in 2008 which led to the publication of over 40 knitting patterns, four books and countless blog posts on how to design shawls, create your own knitting patterns and how to improve your knitting skills. Great idea but books fall flat on execution By Terry I bought the 3 books in this series, hoping to get some good tips on designing various styles of shawls. I was rather disappointed by what appear to be self-published books where money was not spent on editing, and will be returning them.While the idea for the books is great, the books suffer from a lack of professional technical editing. Charts are not print-quality having been created in software meant for the home knitter and not for print publication. Some of the charts are very fuzzy-looking and one chart key is unreadable. Some of the photos are pretty badly pixelated, and no detail of any kind is visible. Directional arrows for knitting direction are somewhat confusing, and make me wonder if the author is referring to direction of how the knitting is worked (which is the convention), or how the rows/rounds are worked.
