About the Author Dana Velden is a Zen priest who lived and studied for 15 years at the San Francisco Zen Center. She has been writing for The Kitchn since 2008 and has contributed to The Hidden Lamp: Stories from Twenty-Five Centuries of Awakened Women and The Kitchn Cookbook. She lives in Oakland, CA.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Finding Yourself Everywhere By Robert Ellis This is a wonderfully wise and beautifully written book.You don't have to be a cook to appreciate it. In fact, it's not about cooking so much as it is about life and love. It's organized around what she calls "the three intimacies"--intimacy with the tangible world, with our state of mind, and with others--and it offers insights like this:"[W]e can cook in a distracted manner, with our heads somewhere else and our bodies on autopilot. But cooking will quickly teach us that we need to be fully present and aware. There's a built-in, heightened sense of alertness when we cook, for the kitchen is fraught with the potential for failure and full of dangerous, sharp, hot, and heavy situations. One second of inattention and we've lost our way in a recipe (s***, did I already add the baking powder?) or missed the part about resting the dough overnight when making bread meant for tonight's dinner. If we want to be good cooks, successful cooks, then we have to pay attention. We have to be fully engaged and in the present moment or dinner won't make it to the table, or it won't be very delicious, or worse." [45]Replace "kitchen" with "relationship" and "cook" with "love" or "lover" and treat everything that doesn't seem to fit as a metaphor.As a guide to life, it's full of "bright simple truths of the moment" and covers the full range of human experience, from "Fearlessness, Failure, and Vulnerability" ("[I]f you accept from the beginning that you will fail, you will have given yourself a gift: the freedom to fail." [146]) to "Giving and Receiving and Gratefulness" ("It is nearly impossible to separate the acts of giving and receiving, for when we truly receive something, that very act of receiving is automatically transformed into a gift that's given back to the giver." [202]) to "How to Be Ready for Anything" ("The key to being ready for anything rests in a willingness to be available for anything, no matter what the circumstances." [195]).The prose is poetry and the words are wise (see "On Counting What is Precious" for a particularly lyrical example). Don't read it from beginning to end, like some task you have to get through. Open it anywhere and taste it. Poke around in the pantry, chop onions (I'll confess I sometimes had tears in my eyes; while reading "Broken," for example), or savor a sliver of spice cake (page 240). Read a chapter in the morning when you first wake up. Read it out loud so you can relish the words in your mouth as you speak them and hear the music in your ears. Read it to a lover in the kitchen as you prepare a simple dish with "Just Two Ingredients" (I'd love to do this). Linger over each chapter as if you're sipping a cup of tea.Read it and then get out of the kitchen (take it with you; I read it at a park, sprawled out on a bed sheet). This is a guide to finding yourself everywhere.

Recently retired I now have time for quiet time and it is beyond rewarding.Never have been a good cook or had the time for all the enjoyment Dana Velden offers and shows you how to open yourself to.But I don't mean this is only for retired ladies.Anyone can enjoy,learn ,and enrich their lives and their love for the kitchen and the home in general.She does give easy wonderful step by step recipes for nubies like me and tells you how to take them to higher levels if you want. There's a delicious carrot soup I'm goin o try first.I already bought a second copy as a gift.Anyone who loves their kitchen or wants to love it more should have this book.I felt like I was sitting down in her kitchen listening and savoring my English Breakfast tea.

Summers I'm familiar with Dana's writing and meditations at "The Kitchn" and have been participating in a "kitchen cure" (a month long kitchen deep clean series). I've been reading a few chapters every morning along with the "cure". I feel like I am listening to a friend give me gentle wisdom as she also relates her experience.I love to cook and love to be in my own kitchen. I often use kitchen "chores" as a break from my home-office work as a computer programmer. I am fortunate to have a kitchen that I love - not perfect my any means, but it is a place that is peaceful to me. My home-office is adjacent. All to say that learning more and thinking more about what happens in my kitchen via Dana's writing - has been a wonderful experience.And truly, the experience has extended beyond the kitchen and to other areas of my life and my house.Although definitely not a cookbook, there are some wonderful recipes given as illustrations of a chapter. I particularly enjoy the recipes as they are ratio based. For example, a soup might be use twice as many XX as you have X.Bottomline, a thoughtful guide to ideas for learning more about myself.
