Ficcaglia Having read Caro's first book, "Grape Expectations," I was anxious to read the sequel and bought it as soon as it was available. In "Saving Our Skins" Caro continues the story of her and her husband's resuscitation of an old vineyard in the Saussignac appelation of Southern France, while at the same time raising two little girls and madly scrambling for enough money to cover the costs of failing equipment and unexpected disasters. I was very happy to see that all of their hard work seems to be paying off. As was her first book, this is well-written and offers a sense of immediacy to the reader; one feels that he is there, with them, biting nails and hoping that everything will work out after all. As I wrote in my review of "Grape Expectations," I know the area she writes about because we have friends in the Dordogne whom we visit, and we also stopped at a nearby winery on our last trip to France, so it was especially fun to read about her trips to Saussignac and Bergerac. It was also fascinating to read about the Feelys' growing integration into the wine-growing community and the respect that they have garnered due to their hard work and ever-developing expertise. All in all, a book I recommend to anyone who loves France, loves wine, or simply loves a good story about the challenges faced by a family when they try to change their lives.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Organic farming and wine in France By bookwomen37 I had a hard time reading this book. I found the writing and the language to be poor. It does not say if this book was translated so I am not sure if the book was written badly in English or translated badly. I also found that the author to be a little whiny, distracted and preachy. After being lectured about the benefits of organic and biodynamic again and again I was tempted to go out and eat some fast food. I did learn a few new things about wine in France. I enjoy France, Wine and travel but I did not enjoy reading about any of them in this book.I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

The follow up book in no way disappoints, except that now I have to wait for yet another book to cover their latest years or....just go visit! And that is exactly what I will do March of 2015! I absolutely loved the second book--more info about who they are, how to take care of wine vines organically & biodynamically, to begin & flourish in the tourist business with their tours & classes, still manage to be in their relationship/marriage, raise their 2 girls & be a part of an amazing, cooperative & supportive community! In awe! Thx!
