Referencing German, French and Jewish theologians, lots of archeological records and other sources, Osterly lays out a rich map of ancient pagan and Hebrew religious beliefs––often adding those of the Greeks and Romans––concerning the supernatural world, death and burial practices, the after-life, angels, and demons. Written like a scholarly paper and filled with Scripture, the author shows how the Hebrews, in taking one idea or superstition from one people or another, and another from another, had a hodgepodge system of religion not always true to Yahweh's instructions.
