Back in the '70's, I made the momentous move from the East Coast to the West and quickly discovered that much of my garden knowledge needed an update. Seattle's climate was unlike anything I had experienced in Massachusetts or Ohio or Colorado, and many of my favorite vegetables simply didn't grow well. A friend steered me to a new seed company, a tiny business called Territorial Seed, unique in that, rather than trying to tout its wares all over the country, it would only sell to people living west of the Cascade Mountains. Every vegetable and cover crop listed had been carefully tested and selected by Steve Solomon for its performance in the maritime Northwest.

By A Customer Steve Solomon's "Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades" is a truly wonderful book and a must for anyone gardening west of the Cascades. "Composting" is a very good book, but is variable. It feels as if Solomon is getting a little crotchety as he ages, and the book would have profited from an editor with a strong pen since the writing style occasionally gets annoying.Solomon's explanation of Carbon Nitrogen ratios is excellent. I now understand better why my compost does what it does at different speeds different times of the year. He is realistic about the benefits of compost and does not uncritically accept the Rodale "Organic" party line. However, I think he goes too far in rejecting it. Solomon has clearly seen many people overcompost and damage their soil's ecology. Yes, too much of anything can be bad and one can increase humus content irrationally, but I think he is too negative. Most of the gardens I see have been neglected and one really can "build the soil" to improve fertility, moisture retention, etc. I would prefer the message to be "It takes time. Don't try build your soil too fast. Do soil tests regularly." not "only try replace the humus you take out". He ends one section with "I conclude that organic matter is somewhat dangerous stuff whose use should be limited...". On this I disagree strongly. In my experience it is a rare case when someone overcomposts. However, I must strongly agree with Solomon on the advantages of using soil testing and using a good organic fertilizer mixture in addition to applying compost on your garden. He gives his famous recipe for complete organic fertilizer (I originally saw it in "Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades") and I can vouch for its efficacy.Solomon raves about poor nutrient value of vegetables caused by over composting. I only partially buy his nutrition arguments. Yes, poor soil can grow veggies with poor nutrition. But the argument does not follow not to build your soil. If veggies grow well and taste great, I trust that measure of nutrition. On the nutrition argumentshe is doing what he accuses other of, making an assertion and providing noevidence to back it up.If you are interesting on composting the book is well worth reading. In fact, it is probably more fun because of the flaws I have just complained about.

What I can't stand is the horrible formatting in the Kindle version. Several instances of words being connected together without spaces in between, tables being completely unformatted, and just plain weird paragraph formatting make this a terrible book for the Kindle. I'm highly disappointed with the Kindle version. Buyer beware.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Composting - The Bible By C. Smith Steve Solomon's work in producing the Organic Gardener's Composting is second to none. His research standards are those of a true academic, yet his writing and general presentation of the material is accessible, non formulaic and for a book of this nature, subtly novelesque.I headed straight for the chapter on Sir Albert Howard's composting methods at Indore in the 1930's and wasn't disappointed - fascinating reading. Also especially interesting was the chapter on vermicomposting. Steve doesn't seem to add material just for the sake of it unless it meets his rigorous criteria. Could only get hold of a 2nd hand copy at a premium price, but have no regrets - it's a gem!

There are a few interesting points, too: I actually hadn't thought about the benefits of crocheting that Margaret outlines (motor skills, concentration, etc.) but it makes quite a bit of sense.The overviews of the stitches is helpful, but a few more photos would definitely be helpful.The chapter on common problems helped me work through a few issues that have plagued me for a while, so that chapter alone makes it worth the read!

It teaches the basics which is exactly what I needed. I liked the encouragement in the book and the comparison that crochet is almost like meditation.

From the Author This project was a profoundly emotional experience for me. When I began to explore possibilities for my next book, I was drawn to an "animal" theme. I pursued an opportunity to write about a small therapeutic horse ranch and was disappointed when the project fell through. However, a couple of months later, my husband was reading about my recently published breast cancer guide, The Road Paved in Pink, in a local newspaper insert. When he turned the page, he discovered another article featuring a heartwarming story about a horse rescue ranch."Where's that?" I asked him. Neither of us had a clue. In the year since we'd moved into the neighborhood, we'd never heard of RVR Horse Rescue, but it was within five miles of our home. The following week, this urban-girl showed up on the ranch to muck stalls and fill water buckets, all in the presence of majestic and beautiful thousand pound creatures - completely foreign and frightening to me. But it was the type of opportunity I had dreamt of since my childhood.RVR Horse Rescue is a non-profit organization run by an army of volunteers. Their mission is to intervene, rescue, rehabilitate, and provide sanctuary for neglected, abused, abandoned, and traumatized horses. I quickly realized was a legitimate and amazing haven of healing and approached Shawn Jayroe, the founder and owner, about her interest in writing her story. To my delight, she accepted immediately. Like so many others, Shawn had always intended to write her story, but hectic daily demands kept taking precedence.I can say with complete honesty that this project changed my life. I knew as soon as I walked through the gates of the ranch that it was a special place. RVR Horse Angels, a fitting description of the volunteers who work tirelessly to save the abused and neglected animals. People who volunteer around the clock to sit with a dying horse. People who do whatever it takes to do the right thing. People who work hard for a worthy cause, then kick back together in fellowship. It is like a huge family, including the normal drama and special characters, but still a family.I could never have anticipated how my life would change when my husband handed me the newspaper and said, "Look at this article about a horse rescue ranch."A Healing Haven is a beautiful addition to my Lemons to Lemonade series.

About the Author Shirley spent the first twenty years of her career in an industrial manufacturing environment, running around the hamster wheel as fast as her legs would carry her. A breast cancer diagnosis jammed on the brakes and forced her to put life in perspective. Shirley’s journey since cancer has been focused on making a positive difference in the world, and she chose writing as her instrument to leave her mark. She was pleased and humbled that readers felt inspired by her memoir, Losing the Girls - My Journey Through Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy and Beyond. Reader feedback led to a “Lemons to Lemonade” concept that had great appeal to the budding author. She had been trying to find a purpose for her writing - a platform that felt meaningful and could make a difference in people’s lives. The Lemons to Lemonade notion morphed into a plan to write a series of uplifting ‘troubles to triumph’ novels, called The Lemons to Lemonade series. By gadgets I have been fortunate enough to not only read this amazing book but have been able to volunteer at RVR and saw for myself the incredible miracles that are performed daily in saving the lives of these magnificent animals. I have seen horses brought in that any other rescue ranch would refuse to take - instead they would throw their hands up and not even try to save a life. Not Shawn and not all of her amazing volunteers. The before and after pictures of Romeo on the cover are just the beginning-there are so many others. This book will make you look at animal rescue organizations in a away that most people never take the time to do. Then please take that knowledge, and don't ever stop trying to help these magnificent creatures in anyway possible.

It takes you beyond the gates and the pretty horses playing and grazing in the pastures into the real world of rescue. Most people are unaware that there is so much cruelty toward these majestic animals. Those who love them can't imagine what fate awaits them in the wrong hands. I know many of the horses I read about and cried as I was reminded of what they had been through. They are different animals once they have been rehabbed and their personalities flourish, so it's easy to forget the torment they've known. Thanks to RVR and the caring volunteers who have love for each and every one of them.

By islandlady I have read blogs from different horse rescues and sanctuaries, but I grew up in Tampa and know someone that volunteeers there, so this really caught my heart. I had horses as a teenager, but my parents sold my mare and her colt after I was in a bad car accident. I know the mare went to a good home, so I was happy for her, even though they would not let me close to her. I worried about the colt, especially many years later when I learned how many were treated, and worse. I think it is so incredible what these people do and I would give anything to be a part of it, if I were not so far away.

About the Author George S. Cuhaj has served the Krause Publications numismatic staff for 20 years. Before becoming an editor with the Standard Catalog of World Coin series he worked for the American Numismatic Society and as a cataloger for Stack's Rare Coins, both of New York City. Cuhaj is past president of the American Medallic Sculpture Association and his art medal creations have been show internationally. Thomas Michael has served as a market analyst for 25 years at Krause Publications, which holds a reputation for creating the world's best-selling coin books. Michael holds a bachelor's of arts degree in history and a mast of arts degree in economics.

The King of Numismatic Catalogs By Martin Baca I often use this catalog and others from this publisher (Krause & Mishler for 19th, 18th, 17th century and for banknotes). And... yes, I am satisfied. The Catalog shows photos of coin (both obverse and reverse) and provides information about coin, namely diameter, weight, alloy (material), purity of alloy, if coin is made from silver or gold also ASW, AGW (actual silver/gold weight, calculated as Troy ounce), mintage (how many coins were produced), description of obverse/reverse, sometimes edge of coin, mint, etc. Of course, catalog provides price of coin, which is divided according year and some levels of quality. Each coin has number–known as KM number–so my colleagues can easy find mentioned coin(s).Some coins have two variants and this catalog sometimes mentions variant, but unfortunately sometimes variant of the coin is not described (for example, variant has lower numbers, or different word order on the edge, and the price of the variant can be ten times higher). It is general catalog, so that it does not provide other facts, such as engraver, artists, mint, and so on.This catalog, in full title as "2016 Standard Catalog of World Coins, 43rd edition" is unique, excellent, does not have rivals so that I recommend it. Numismatist can find a lot of necessary information, almost all crucial facts (and some particular information could find in special literature). I heard sentence: "Coin collecting is Hobby of The Kings and The King of Hobbies"... so that I can paraphrase: This Catalog is King of Numismatic Catalogs!

With the most spectacular photographs I've seen in ages. But when I flipped through it, I felt like a rube.Who are May and Axel Vervoordt? Do you know? I surely didn't.It turns out they are Major.The Vervoordts live in a 50 room castle near Antwerp. (It's open to the public twice each year.) Axel is an art and antiques dealer and a decorator whose clients include Sting, Pierre Bergé, Henry Kravis and Bill Gates. He has a staff of 85.His wife, May, heads the textile and fabric division. But her greater skill may be in the domestic arts. "When May prepares a table," Axel writes, "the result is like a still-life painting." And the visuals are the least of it. "May believes food is energy and has the power to make people feel better, spiritually as well as physically," Axel writes. "Cooking can be a great pleasure, and just as for the potter who sculpts clay, the skill is a craft and the creation is a work of art."Easy art, it turns out. Simple art. Quick art. Most of May's recipes require just 20-30 minutes to prepare. Don't be put off by the long list of ingredients --- they're mostly herbs. May has done her ayurvedic homework; you'll often see turmeric, black pepper and cinnamon in her recipes. No surprise that, after dinner, she serves herbal tea, not coffee.What you won't find: dinners with meat in the starring role. I have recently given up TV to try and explore a world without fake reality and this book enriches my journey and reminds me that life is beautiful with simple enjoyments including friends and family. Not only are the photographs beautiful but the writing is superb and I look forward to a cup of tea and a couple of pages at the end of a long day.Thank you.

There are only 3 or 4 tunisian patterns, but with mistakes and forgotten stitches in the instructions. I crochet tunisan a lot and found nothing new. No new tunisians patterns.The other included stitches are single foundation chain, how to knit on a circular needle??? and stuff, what doesn't matter for the tunisian theme.This book is only to learn the basic tun. stitch, tun. purl stitch, not more. And the throw pattern from the cover is not included.
