About the Author Page Dickey is a well-known garden writer. Among her many books are Gardens in the Spirit of Place, the award-winning BreakingGround: Portraits of Ten Garden Designers, and Duck Hill Journal. She created Duck Hill, her garden in North Salem, New York, over the past 30 years.

There are beautiful pictures of bits and pieces of gorgeous gardens, but nothing that shows the full garden. No layouts, no design information, no plant selections to speak of. Just a closeup of a flower bed here, one angle of a garden room there, the wall of a house over here... The book is almost too aggravating to read. The text spends more time talking about the garden owners and the Conservancy than it does about the garden itself, and you certainly have no real sense of each garden after reading the book. I looked up online some of the gardens I'd liked best because I couldn't tell what they were actually like. This book is far more a Conservancy ad than a useful or beautiful garden book.

Excellent book celebrating America's best gardens By judith tankard This lavish book celebrates the Garden Conservancy's preservation projects as well as a selection of private gardens nationwide. It is a delight to behold, from its handsome design to the beautifully illustrated spreads on individual gardens, all photographed to perfection by Marion Brenner. It is a rare opportunity to take a peek at some of America's most innovative new gardens that clearly show the diversity of climate, traditions, and design talent across the country.
