In the 1980 s, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alison Lurie wrote a meditation on clothing as an expression of history, social status and individual psychology. The Language of Clothes (Random House) came to be highly regarded in the literature of couture and design.

Lurie has returned with The Language of Houses, a provocative and entertaining journey through the architecture of houses and buildings and the divided spaces within come to reflect the attitudes and purposes of the organizations and people who inhabit them.

What makes a house is in the eye of the beholder, and the word can mean anything from church to office to domicile and more and relies on the use of materials such as stone and wood and stucco and the roles of stairs and windows, tight interiors and open expanses.

Structures discussed are: schools, churches, government building, museums, prisons, hospitals, restaurants, and of course, houses and homes.

Filled with literary references and charming hand-drawings, Lurie s new work will appeal to fans of Bill Bryson s At Home, as well as provoke wide review attention for this award-winning author."

The Language of Houses: How Buildings Speak to Us, by Alison Lurie

Review “The Language of Houses…. makes a powerful argument that how we choose to order the space we live and work in reveals far more about us.… full of mischievous apercus, and Ms. Lurie at her best is bracingly subversive….a mine of adroit observation, uncovering apparently humdrum details to reveal their unexpected, and occasionally poignant, human meaning.” (Wall Street Journal)“. . . A book meticulously packed with facts, paradoxes and observations. . . . a rich compendium of information, exploring how we inhabit our homes, our offices and our places of learning, leisure and worship, from every conceivable angle, in neatly organized chapters addressing each category of building.” (Seattle Times)“Lurie maintains a light touch with such damning observations. . . One of the book’s best chapters treats public high schools. . . .its insights into our vanity, and capacity for almost negligent public construction, are ripe for the gleaning.” (Boston Globe)“Allusions to the work of Charlotte Brontë, Tom Wolfe, Joyce Carol Oates and Michael Lewis…(Lurie) takes a broad look at the design of museums, residences, schools, prisons and restaurants — to name a few of the featured categories — and how they have evolved over time…“The Language of Houses” is light and breezy.” (Washington Post)“The Language of Houses has every quality you would expect from a work by Alison Lurie: intelligence, authority, wit and charm.” (Louis Begley)“Alison Lurie, in her lucid, jargon-free way, allows us to read what architecture is saying. She has culled the best ideas from a vast secondary literature and passed it all through the sieve of her brilliant mind.” (Edmund White)“There's much to absorb in this sequel to Alison Lurie's The Language of Clothes, but The Language of Houses is an extraordinarily absorbing book—it wears its learning lightly, holding this reader's attention the way a fine novel does. I was particularly fascinated by the linked chapters on religious buildings and museums.” (James McConkey)

About the Author Alison Lurie has published ten books of fiction - including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Foreign Affairs and five books of non-fiction. She is professor of English Emeritus at Cornell.

A Most Disappointing Book By Janet Perry If I say the word house, what comes to mind?Probably a place where a person or a family lives.Unhappily, Lurie seems to think that this word encompasses every sort of building, from museums to you office cubicle. That could be why she spends almost 60% of the book on them. So what you & I mean by 'house" is not the focus of the book. That's the first problem. The second problem is the book shows Lurie's prejudices as a boarding-school-educated New Yorker because she doesn't like: housing developments, commerce, overweight people, or folks who live in the West. Rarely does she talk about architectural styles of the West. She has little but contempt for the tastes of the middle class, verbally sneering at sectionals and overstuffed recliners. That wouldn't be quite so bad if she didn't show a lack of research about many things. While she's quick to identify several styles of churches, she seems completely unaware of many significant styles of churches, something easily remedied. When talking about housing developments, which she obviously dislikes, she completely ignores two highly significant historical, architectural and social movements that lead to our current state: the rise of bungalows in the first half of the 20th Century, and the explosion of suburbia after World War II. Both these developments importantly led to our current ideas about houses and the dream of home ownership. And, importantly, the trends made these things possible not for just the middle class, but for the working class, a group of people Lurie ignores. To make matters worse, her supposed analysis is all on the surface. It was bad enough in the early chapters of the book, when she actually talked about houses, but as the book continues she increasingly gives the readers only descriptions. Nothing really about what these things might mean.I was so disappointed in this book, because her previous "language" book, The Language of Clothes, was great. I think had Lurie actually focused deeply on houses and only on houses, perhaps there could have been something there, but given a level of analysis barely above one of her students, I think it might have been too big a subject for her.Don't waste your time.

I found this one a bit breezier and broader than Bryson’s focus on the house through history. Lurie touches on all the buildings in our lives, from schools to museums and more. This is a companionable book for anyone interested in the meaning of everyday life as seen through the eyes of architecture.

I’d never realized how many powerful or subtle messages can be conveyed by varieties of rooms, arrangements within them, and by the surrounding whole of the structure. I was especially taken with Ms. Lurie’s repeated invoking of sociological and psychological issues relating to status, a factor of life we don’t often talk of directly today in our supposed classless society. Ms. Lurie shows us that the environments we create speak truths we hesitate to admit in words. I have read all of Alison Lurie’s novels and I find her clear and direct non-fiction style – enlivened further with satisfyingly humorous asides to the reader – presents her font of ideas and well-researched facts in as stimulating (or else soothing) a manner as descriptions of atmospheres, characters and characters’ motives in her novels. The Language of Houses well met my standard of a good read in non-fiction: encouraging me to look at things around me in a new way, to think of things I hadn’t before.

Powerful, mesmerizing narrative of the life of an African-born slave   "St. Augustine during the nineteenth century has been described for us by many a resident and traveler, but never so pungently and colorfully as by Sitiki, renamed Uncle Jack, an African American who passed from slave in the first half of the century to freedman in the second."--Michael Gannon, author of Florida: A Short History   "Griffin presents Sitiki/Smith's narrative, his life and his times, with sensitivity, respect, and accuracy. A revealing autobiography of a remarkable man."--Jim Miller, former state archaeologist and chief of the Bureau of Archaeological Research   "As the only first-person slave narrative to emerge from Florida, this volume offers us a human perspective on the experience of enslavement and relocation and tells the story of a remarkable man."--Aaron Sheehan-Dean, author of Why Confederates Fought   Recently discovered as a hand-written document in the Buckingham Smith Collection at the New-York Historical Society, this remarkable first-person narrative traces the life of Sitiki, whose name was changed to Jack Smith after his enslavement in America.   Captured and sold into slavery in Africa as a five-year-old, Sitiki travelled to America as a cabin boy. Eventually sold by the ship's captain to Josiah Smith of Savannah, Georgia, he lived there and in Connecticut with his new master. Captured by the British during the War of 1812, he was returned to the Smiths, to be freed only after the Civil War. He went on to become the first black Methodist minister in St. Augustine, Florida where he established his own church.   Patricia Griffin does not leave the story at the conclusion of the slave narrative, but explores Sitiki's experiences and places them in clear and valuable context. She presents the narrative unencumbered, allowing Sitiki's authority, compassion, and personality to speak for itself.

Griffin) has two equally important characteristics for this lover of history--the perspective of the person that actually lived through the time and place; and the interrelated information collected by a diligent researcher. Sitiki's narrative, though brief, was very intriguing with its wealth of details regarding the places in which he lived (Africa and America). The complimentary information added by Griffin comprised the majority of the 200+ page book. Sorely missed were the raw thoughts and emotions that might have been a part of the narrative if it had been written by Sitiki himself as opposed to being recorded by his owner, Buckingham Smith. It was a great pleasure perusing through the text due to the wealth of information from a rare perspective--that of an African citizen, transitioning to an African slave, then to a slave in America.Barbara Peters, Author - Adulterous Heart ISBN 978-1442188105

Lowther There are relatively few narratives by African-born slaves, which makes it exceedingly difficult to see their lives as slaves in America against the backdrop of their cultural and religious roots. The story told by Sitiki helps somewhat. He sketchily recalls his freeborn life in a village, as well as his domestic servitude in Africa before being sold into foreign bondage. Patricia C. Griffin has done an admirable job in presenting this long-lost narrative, without over-embellishing it or over-speculating on the more opaque parts of Sitiki's long life and prominence in ante- and post-bellum Saint Augustine, Florida. We could wish that Sitiki had said more about his people in the West African interior, but he was very young when seized by slave traders. In America, he experienced an uncommonly benign enslavement. It is on the latter that he focused his recollections.

In the summer of 1914 most of Europe plunged into a war so catastrophic that it unhinged the continent's politics and beliefs in a way that took generations to recover from.

The disaster terrified its survivors, shocked that a civilization that had blandly assumed itself to be a model for the rest of the world had collapsed into a chaotic savagery beyond any comparison.

In 1939 Europeans would initiate a second conflict that managed to be even worse - a war in which the killing of civilians was central and which culminated in the Holocaust.

To Hell and Back tells this story with humanity, flair and originality. Kershaw gives a compelling narrative of events, but he also wrestles with the most difficult issues that the events raise - with what it meant for the Europeans who initiated and lived through such fearful times - and what this means for us.

M Mills To Hell and Back is the newly published book by the distinguished British historian Sir. Dr. Ian Kershaw. Kershaw is the foremost expert on Hitler and the Nazi era. This volume is the first of two books dealing with the twentieth century catastrophe of war and death which transpired in bloody Europe. The book begins with the First World War and concludes in 1949 at the beginning of the Cold War. The author plans a second volume. The book is strong in the way Kershaw surveys the politics of all the European nations during the period being discussed. As always his analysis of Nazi Germany is excellent as is his coverage of the cruel dictatorship of Stalin in the Soviet Union. The style is sober and scholarly and some general readers will be bored with the text. The book has excellent maps and a good bibliography. The volume is part of the Penguin History series.Kershaw is always worth reading. Recommended.

32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. The Wheels Come Off By David Shulman The Europe of 1914, at least for its bourgeoisie, represented the height of civilization, the “Belle Époque” if you will. And of a sudden the wheels fell off the track and the continent plunged into the darkness The Great War. British historian Ian Kershaw certainly proves George Kennan’s maxim that World War I was “the great seminal catastrophe of the 20th Century.” The war arose in the milieu of ethnic nationalism, territorial revisionism and increasing class conflict growing out of mass industrialization. These three factors would remain long after the war ended and into this pot would be thrown the crisis in capitalism induced by the Great Depression. Also arising out of the war was the successful Bolshevik Revolution that sent chills down the spines of the conservative elite. To Kershaw this was the most important event of the 20th Century because the very real fear of communism made opposition to the rise of fascism far more difficult in the West. It hardened the right and split the left.As a result the crisis in capitalism forced politics to the right rather than the left which is not too much different from what happened post-2008. Thus the West’s response to the rise of fascism was timid, to say the least with respect to Germany’s re-occupation of the Rhineland in 1936, the Spanish Civil War and the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia in 1938. All the while the great purge trials were going on in Moscow.Kershaw’s view of this history seems more deterministic than say that of Zara Steiner’s. To him there is more or less a straight-line between the Versailles settlements to the start of World War II. To be sure he gives credit to “the spirit of Locarno,” but not enough in my opinion. He also leaves out two chance events that may have altered history. The first is outside his topic and that was the premature death of New York Federal Reserve President in 1928. Had he lived, in the minds of more than a few economists the worst effects of the Great Depression might have been avoided. Within his bailiwick was again the premature death of German Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann in October 1929. If there ever were a German politician who could have stopped Hitler, it was Stresemann.Kershaw brings the holocaust to the forefront in Hitler’s war of annihilation in the East in his coverage of World War II. Simply put Hitler wanted to conquer the West, but he wanted to destroy the East. He almost succeeded.Kershaw finishes his book with the beginnings of the postwar recovery, the role of the Marshall plan and the start of the Cold War. By 1949 Europe is central to the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, but its power is but a shadow of its former self. Kershaw has done an excellent job in portraying this epochal period that this review hardly does justice to.

Kershaw uses comparison to make ideas clear and distinct. Chapters:1) On the Brink2) The Great Disaster3) Turbulent Peace4) Dancing on the Volcano5) Gathering Shadows6) Danger Zone7) Towards the Abyss8) Hell on Earth9) Quiet Transitions in the Dark Decades10) Out of the AshesKershaw takes turns to cover many different European areas. This enables reader to constrast different developments occurring at the same time. The interaction of the English, German, Russian, Italian, etc., worlds create understanding. Very well done!I enjoyed the fact that Kershaw did not avoid making moral judgements. War is horrible. Hatred is evil, whether it is directed against Jews, Kulacks, Businessmen, Handicapped, Poles, or anyone else! His comparison of Italian Facism, German Nazism and Russian Communism is fascinating. His explanation of the difference between the eastern and western front in WW2 was enlightening. Germany had two different goals. West was to conquer, east was to exterminate. Not the same! This work does not only present war and politics, but also the emotional, cultural and religious effects. Covers artists and artistic movements. Picasso, Thomas Mann, Bertold Brecht, etc. are shown in the new world of the twentieth century. "Earlier ideals of beauty, harmony and reason were radically discarded in modernism. Fragmentation, disunity and chaos were the new leitmotifs - a remarkable anticipation in cultural forms of the political and economic rupture left by the First World War." (167)The religious outlook changed. "As people turned to the state, to political movements, or to other public institutions to answer their needs, the Churches in the eyes of increasing numbers has nothing to offer. Nationalism is the new religion. People don't go to church. They go to nationalist meetings. . . . And as war and genocide ravaged Europe, Nietzsche's attack on belief in rationality and truth, his denial of morality rooted in religious belief, came to seem anything but misplaced." (431) Trenchant analysis. This book includes eight pages of glossy photographs. Concludes with a twenty-seven page bibliography and a forty-two page index.Easy to read with a clear narrative. Kershaw presents a persuasive story. I enjoyed it.

By Markham Roberts A voyeuristic fantasy with beautiful photographs providing a glimpse into the lives of artists and how they collect and live with art. Stylish Party Dresses: 26 Easy and Inexpensive Sew-It-Yourself Dresses for that Special Occasion, by Yoshiko Tsukiori

Review "I suspect Stylish Party Dresses will be an equally popular addition to Tsukiori's books published in English. It's a lovely book which, in addition to 16 dresses, also includes boleros, tops, skirts, a slip and a jumpsuit." —An English Girl at Home blog"… you can interpret these patterns to suit your own style and life—or party for that matter…With 26 dresses, tops, jackets and skirts provided in Stylish Party Dresses, I think this book does represent good value for your spend if the designs appeal and suit you." —Sew Busy Lizzy blog"This book is named Stylish Party Dresses by our favorite Japanese Sewing Book authors — Yoshiko Tsukiori. If you are not familiar with her, she's the author of many many sewing books […] There are 26 projects you can make in this book, but not all are for dresses. Included are 3 bolero patterns that you can use with the dresses as cover-ups." —Japanese Sewing Books blog"I saw the Japanese version of Stylish Party Dresses in Tokyo earlier this year, so I'm so excited to get my hands on the newly released English version! […] With 26 designs to choose from, having this one book covers you for any special occasion you have coming up. The author, Yoshiko Tsukiori has done it again with simple, minimalist designs which put the fabric in the spotlight." —Sew in Love blog"A stunning combination of fabric choice, simplicity of design, and enticing details add up to dazzling fashion combinations on page after page." —Midwest Book Review"Of all the books I've received […] this is the one that has most excited me. Yoshiko Tsukiori will be well known to anyone who has sewn from a Japanese pattern book. She created the extremely popular Stylish Dress Books and the Happy Homemade series. The styles suit so many people." —Top Notch blog"Occasion dresses are everywhere, but the "right" occasion dresses are few and far between. I cannot tell you how many times I've searched through my closet and come up devastated because I can't find that perfect dress for the wedding, birthday, baby shower, or casual get together I've been invited to. With Yoshiko Tsukiori's gorgeous and simple designs, Stylish Party Dresses has kept me in style all year round." —Madison Bowes, Editor, AllFreeSewing.com blog"[…] I'm a fan of Yoshika Tsukiori's Dress books. I bought the hugely popular Stylish Dress Books one and two a few years back. I've made a couple of things from them which get regular wear and I enjoy the pleasure of looking through them for dressmaking inspiration, the clothes and the styling are always a treat for the eyes. […] Inside it you will find 26 garments for formal occasions- think weddings, special occasions, even funerals. They are not all dresses. Instead there a mix of tops, skirts jackets, two-piece sets and a jump suit as well as dresses. Formality is key. This is reflected in both the designs and the fabrics used." —Very Kerry Berry blog

20 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Not for me, but could work for others... By Teacher, coach, wife, bargain-hunter, etc. Where to begin with this review? On one hand, the author clearly is a talented seamstress and designer. However, this is one of those instances where I should have gone to an actual bookstore and looked through the book before purchasing it. Since I pre-ordered it before the publication date, all the pictures weren't available to look through yet. I would recommend that others peruse the available photos (if they have added them) before purchasing and when considering the weight of my review. The designs/dresses: I would have to say the use of the term "stylish" in the title is subjective, because out of 26 dresses, there are only a handful that I would (perhaps) wear, and most of them I wouldn't don to attend a party. But seriously, maybe I just go to the wrong kinds of parties. :) A few of the designs I did like include the "Black Lace Dress," the "Taffeta Two-piece Set," and the "Mini Dress with Raglan Sleeves," all of which echoed classic/traditional dress design, imo. But the majority of the designs have a very modern/loose/baggy/abstract feel to them. So, unless I either turn into a waif-like hipster or become pregnant in the near future, these dresses are unlikely to become part of my wardrobe. I tend to prefer a timeless/traditional look with an emphasis on accentuating and flattering the silhouette of the wearer. The author seems to have a petite and not-so-curvy frame, and the flap says her work is based in Japan. These factors may help explain why her sense of design and aesthetic seems to reflect vastly different elements than my own. This doesn't make the book itself bad, it just isn't to my taste and in this case, that's the main basis for the the two-star rating. The book itself: First of all, there is a pretty glaring typo on almost every page from 4-32. On the side of the page are the words "How to MADE it" followed by the page number containing the instructions. I get that it's a translated book, but this is not a self-published book or a brand new company, so surely they have editors to catch this stuff? I know that's nit-picky, but it just makes the book seem amateur, and it makes me afraid to make a dress for fear there may be additional errors in either wording or measurement translations, which would spell frustration and disaster when you get down to the sewing. Also, I'm not sure if it's because the book originally was written/designed in Japanese and translated into English, but I felt a little lost navigating the book's layout, and I didn't like that there is literally only one page of writing by the author to introduce herself or tell the story of the design and purpose of the dresses. Finally, the photography in the book doesn't do much for me, in terms of highlighting the dresses and giving the reader a true sense of what the dresses might look like from multiple angles. My instinct is that the photography and styling of the book match the design sensibilities and the vibe of the dresses, so to me they look very abstract, modern, and purposefully minimalist. My favorite is one where she's just standing there in one of the dresses with a perplexed expression, awkwardly holding some grapes. I'll try to attach a picture of this page if it will let me. Everything about that picture seems to underscore the fact that this book just was not written with me in mind. The bottom line is that this book and I are just a mismatch from every angle. That doesn't mean others won't love it, and it doesn't mean I think it's a poorly written book or that I'm slamming the author.Ultimately, I can confidently say that if I weren't too lazy, I probably would return the book to Amazon. But since returning items ordered online is a task I avoid at all costs, I'm fairly sure the book will either be given away or sit on my shelf of sewing books gathering dust.

If you are just starting to collect Pokemon Cards or are a long time collector, this huge informative unofficial book will educate you in the cards that started it all: The Originals. This book entails all you need to know about the beginning of the Pokemon Card era. Inlcuded in this book is a list of every single card, set and theme deck that was produced from the original Base set all the way through to Skyridge. This book covers everything you will ever need to know about "The Originals". Aside from a detailed and informative list with images of each and every single set produced from 1999-2003 and every theme deck produced, this massive book also contains: - A short story on how I got into collecting Pokemon Cards when I was a young child. - A detailed description on Wizard's of the Coast (the original producers of the Pokemon TCG before Nintendo took over). - Investing tips for Pokemon Cards. - Tips on how to purchase Pokemon Cards and what to look for. - How to make your Pokemon Cards pay for themselves. - An extremely detailed description of how to sell Pokemon Cards, from my 8 years experience selling purely Pokemon Cards on eBay. - How to grade Pokemon Cards. - The differences between 1st Edition, Shadowless and Unlimited sets - A list with images of error cards - A list with images of banned cards (you would not believe some of the cards that were printed!) - Complete Gen 1 and Gen 2 list of Pokemon (251 Pokemon) - Plus a lot more information! I began collecting Pokemon Cards when I was 8, 16 years later I am still collecting and I have amassed a large collection of the original Pokemon Cards, I have gained invaluable knowledge of the trading card game and established a great customer base from selling so many Pokemon Cards over so many years. I originally started writing this up while I was at University in between lectures and classes for myself, because I wanted a checklist and informative list of each and every single card that was produced and wanted to have every complete set in its entirety. This hobby turned into a passion, which then turned into an obsession. I decided to make one book with all the cards from the early years and also to include the answers to all the questions I have been asked over the years. I also added anything else that I thought may be interesting to learn, or to laugh at. I hope that you find this guide book interesting, but at the same time useful in your pursuit of collecting them all. Also make sure to check out my new Pokedex Guide Book!

Fantastic Large Selection of Christmas Designs By iiiireader [[VIDEOID:dd7094901955fefdf483c532ea53785f]]This is my first coloring book by Penny Farthing Graphics. They are published via CreateSpace which is generally used for self-publishing. The designs are drawn by a variety of artists from all over the world and are licensed via Shutterstock.com. What we end up with is a great coloring book (although on thin paper) with a large and varied selection of designs. There are 60 coloring images in this book. I'm happy with the variety and the way the designs are printed on the page. Every one of them is complete rather than running off the page. If a design is stopped, it is stopped with a frame which gives me a defined end to the item I am coloring even if it is not “complete” within the picture (e.g., half of a stocking, ornament, wreath, etc.) The editors of the book have done a great job with their selection, including all the symbols I think of for Christmas, such as: Christmas Trees, Santa, ornaments, stocking, nutcrackers, fireplaces, snowman, candles and much more. The pages are printed on thin white paper which is not perforated. The designs are printed on one side of the page with the back left blank. The designs stop well short of the binding and can easily be removed with a pen knife if you so choose. My gel pens and markers all leaked through this paper. Not a problem, though, as I can put a piece of chipboard or a couple of heavy weight pieces of paper under the page I am working on to keep the ink from leaking through.I am really looking forward to coloring in this book. I'm also really pleased that CreateSpace is offering an avenue for artists (or groups of artists) to self-publish their designs. It gives us, as colorists, a much greater choice.

By Jackie Cooper This book is not for every colorist, but if you love coloring a variety of illustrations in a variety of art styles this book might be just the one you are looking for. You will find many intricately detailed patterns filled with the best loved Christmas symbols, adorned Christmas trees, a whimsical snowman who is simply detailed but charming, add in Toy Soldiers standing in a row, Stockings hung with care on the mantel, Gifts wrapped in colorful paper and adorned with festive bows, Snowflakes, Candy Canes , and so many more in this huge book with its 60 pages of Christmas just waiting for you to add color and your own personal art style to bring them to life. The cover picture is included in the book and is representative of many of the other images. This is the book I am using for my Christmas coloring party this year; I know everyone will find a picture they love. There is only one illustration in this book I do not care for. WOW that is out of 60 illustrations.1. 60 illustrations printed one per page (the back of each page is blank) on medium weight bright white paper2. All my markers bleed through the pages, I just place a sheet of paper under the page I am coloring to prevent damage to the next picture if I am using markers.3. Most of the images include many small details, with a few less detailed for variety so Ultra Fine Markers, and Colored pencils are my coloring medium of choice for this book.4. All images are centered on each page and end ¼ inch to ½ inch from all the edges including the edge with the binding.a. This leaves enough room to easily color each illustration in its entirety.b. This leaves enough room to remove the pages with a box knife, my preferred method; I use a ruler, a box knife and place a piece of cardboard under the page to prevent cutting the next page.c. This is enough room to take this book to an office supply store and have them cut the binding off, to release all the pages from the book. This gives you individual pages for your coloring party, coloring club, plus a wonderful choice to donate the images to seniors in assisted living housing, and perfect for students.5. The author’s have spent days searching the works of many artists with care, chosen the best and brought them to you in this wonderful collection of Christmas illustrations. The images have been purchased under license from Shutterstock.com. This means that when you purchase this book you are supporting not one but many individual artists, from all over the world who post their images for purchase on the web and do not publish their own coloring books.Received a free copy for evaluation and unbiased review.

Does the Golden Rule matter? It depends on the game.

"We have to shift the game before we can promote the Rule. This is why teaching morality alone is insufficient. Educating our children in the Golden Rule without teaching about finite and infinite games and zero-sum and nonzero worldviews is a waste of time. Doing so would be like teaching them the rules of chess while insisting they play only checkers."―from Chapter 10, “Play Different”

This provocative and challenging exploration of the Golden Rule, widely accepted as humanity's moral true north, neither praises the Rule uncritically nor naively insists that it is applicable in every situation. Rather, it looks critically at the Rule in the context of game theory to see where it works and where it doesn’t, when it is applicable and when it isn’t. It shows you why knowing the difference can offer you a powerful way to transform your life from one driven by fear to one driven by love.

This philosophical game changer is written for people of all faiths or none who praise the Rule and yet violate it over and over again. It invites you into the fascinating world of ethical decision making in a way that helps you use the Golden Rule as a fulcrum for shifting your life from often unethical competition to compassionate and even loving cooperation.

    Review

"Brilliantly clear, easy to read, well-informed in relevant science, philosophy and religion ... a real contribution to our understanding of the Golden Rule."―Jeffrey Wattles, author, The Golden Rule; associate professor of philosophy, Kent State University

“The Golden Rule may not be golden for the reasons you think! In this provocative book, Rabbi Rami leads us to a life of 'infinite play,' where the outcome of the game is a gorgeous paradox: everyone wins.”―Mirabai Starr, author, God of Love: A Guide to the Heart of Judaism, Christianity and Islam and Caravan of No Despair: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation

“Intriguing.... Reverently considering scripture from a multitude of spiritual traditions while at the same time stripping the Golden Rule of its religious trappings, [it] calls and challenges us to live in the truly golden nonzero sum world of interdependence.”―Steven Greenebaum, author, Practical Interfaith: How to Find Our Common Humanity as We Celebrate Diversity

“Provides a fresh look at the substance of the Golden Rule that has the potential to make it far more accessible and useful.”―Pastor Don Mackenzie, coauthor, Getting to the Heart of Interfaith: The Eye-Opening, Hope-Filled Friendship of a Pastor, a Rabbi and an Imam

“[Does] all of us a big favor: help[s] us understand why we humans and our religions have so often failed in our practice of the Golden Rule, and give[s] us invaluable insights and practical tools to make the Golden Rule a lived reality.”―Paul McKenna, coordinator, Scarboro Missions Interfaith Department

“Shapiro has an important message: either we play the game of life by trying to win at the expense of others (in which case we’ll likely all suffer) or we try to cooperate and treat others as we want to be treated (in which case we may all end up winning).”―Harry J. Gensler, author, Ethics and the Golden Rule; professor of philosophy, Loyola University Chicago

Shapiro, a rabbi and author of books on spirituality across different religious traditions, turns an interestedgaze on the Golden Rule, some form of which appears in every religion and culture. But Shapiro wonderswhy, if the rule is so prevalent and esteemed, it is so easily ignored. Using tenets of game theory, heexplains that in finite, zero-sum games like football, where the goal is to win, it makes little sense to applythe Golden Rule. However, in infinite, nonzero sum games―life-affirming situations like keepingfriendships and protecting relationships―nothing makes more sense than the rule. Although there is somerepetition here, Shapiro writes engagingly, and his efforts to show how practicing the Golden Rule makeslife more satisfying and sustainable are welcome. When he ventures into wider territory―how the rulemight be employed globally, for instance―the conversation becomes more complex and thoughtprovoking. Finally, he reminds readers that if the Golden Rule fails to apply to the kind and quality of thegame being played, it might be time to look at the game.

According to Shapiro, life is a game. Games come in two forms, which I'll call competitive and cooperative; life requires that we play both. The cooperative form should dominate.Competitive ("finite zero-sum") games have winners and losers; examples include basketball, poker, elections, and business. The goal is to win, which requires that someone else loses. What is "good" (in an ends-means sense) is what helps you win. The golden rule ("Treat others as you want to be treated") doesn't work here, since it blocks winning; imagine playing basketball while following "It's wrong to strip the ball away from your opponent, since you wouldn't want the opponent to strip the ball away from you."Cooperative ("infinite nonzero") games have a different goal: to maintain a relationship that benefits all the players. An example is friendship. We nourish friendship by treating our friend as we want to be treated. The golden rule is the best strategy for playing cooperative games.Should we follow the golden rule? More basically, what type of game should dominate our lives? Since humanity is so deeply interconnected, and since others won't let us get away with just having our own way, playing life as a competitive game alienates others and brings frustration. It's more fulfilling to play life as a cooperative game, where everyone can win. That's why we need to follow the golden rule, the strategy that fits cooperative games. But is life really a game, as Shapiro claims? It's hard to say, since "game" here is so unclear; as Wittgenstein explained, there's no set of clear conditions that all and only games must satisfy. We'd explain the word "game" by giving examples - like basketball, chess, and solitaire. Since we'd never give life as an example, life isn't literally a game. So "Life is a game" is a metaphor. Is it a useful metaphor? It can be useful, but it can also oversimplify. It definitely oversimplifies if it leads to the distressing idea that we can't sensibly apply the golden rule in competitive activities - like sports, elections, and business.Suppose I play one-on-one basketball on Saturday mornings with my friend Bob. When I play, is my goal to win? While we both try to win, we also play to promote fitness, have fun, and nourish our friendship - we have multiple goals. The golden rule is relevant, since there are fair and unfair ways to play. Would it be right for me to trip Bob or break his arm in order to win? The golden rule would lead me to say no, since when I imagine this same thing being done to me in the same situation, I condemn (disapprove of, object to) the action. The golden rule, as applied to competitive activities, or perhaps always, is about what actions I'd object to when I imagine them done to me. In the earlier example, I don't want Bob to strip the ball away from me, but I wouldn't condemn (disapprove of, object to) this action if done fairly. So then the golden rule lets me strip away the ball, if this is done fairly, but it doesn't let me trip Bob or break his arm.So yes, the golden rule can apply to competitive activities. Running for office is competitive; but it can be done for wider cooperative purposes (for example, to help pick the best public officials) and it ought to be subject to golden-rule fairness constraints (which prohibit, for example, lying about your opponent - we'd object to this being done to us). Similarly, businesses can compete for wider purposes (for example, to help people get good and affordable products) and they ought to be subject to golden-rule fairness constraints (which prohibit, for example, burning down our opponent's factory - we'd disapprove of this being done to us). In life, we can have a mix of motives and play many games at once; maybe I complete to be starting quarterback, for the good of the team (cooperative), to help us defeat our opponent (competitive), and to promote the wider goods that football brings (cooperative). All our actions, even competitive ones, need to satisfy golden-rule consistency and fit into a larger cooperative effort that considers everyone's good.I take this to be a friendly amendment to the framework (at least as I read it, perhaps incorrectly) used in Shapiro's excellent book. As he rightly emphasizes, we need to be more about working together than about winning or losing.

Interesting, Insightful Exploration of Golden Rule Challenges By MBushman Additive, interesting and clear perspectives on the Golden Rule for those attempting to understand how a concept so ubiquitous in religious and secular teachings can be so frequently ignored. The author makes a compelling argument for the Golden Rule as the philosophical perspective in win-win exchanges while pointing out its failings when confronted with win-lose situations. Importantly, he also points out that many choose to operate from a win-lose perspective when win-win options are both readily available and preferable. A strong addition to compelling explorations of the Golden Rule by Harry Gensler, Jeffrey Wattles and many others.
