By goldendog Foolproof Walking-Foot Quilitng Designs by Mary Mashuta is really an encyclopedia of stitches you can do with your walking foot. What is a walking foot? A walking foot is a sewing machine foot that hooks over your sewing machine lever, and its purpose is to keep a stack of fabric all even, with the top area being fed through the sewing machine at the same speed as the bottom level. It is good for stitching in the ditch, keeping plaids lined up evenly, and quilting. The only real drawback to using a walking foot is that you need to turn your fabric every time the pattern changes direction.Foolproof Walking-Foot Quilting Designs first shows pictures of patterns found in nature and man-made architecture. Next, Mashuta shows how to make your own patterns using clear contact paper, which can adhere to the top of the fabric, for you to sew around. Patterns advance in difficutly, and the difficulty of each pattern is rated with a number of alarm clocks assigned to the pattern. The last chapter covers the art of sashiko, done on the sewing machine. The patterns are very detailed, but they are also detailed if you want to do these patterns by hand.I reccommend this book for quilters, because I have never seen a book that covers frree-motion patterns to this extent. Get out that walking foot!

In her new book, Mary, an award winning quilter, teacher and writer, opens the quilting doors even wider by sharing her creative and original ideas for foolproof quilting with a walking foot. “Walking Foot Quilting Designs” is chock full of excellent ideas for quilting your own tops and for taking ownership of your project to it’s completion. The techniques are practical, accessible, and very creative. I love how Mary opens the reader’s eyes to discovering quilting designs “everywhere” and how she shares her ideas on how to easily and inexpensively make templates and utilize other simple quilting techniques. What a playful approach to quilting!! The “gallery” of quilts is also fabulous and includes Mary’s signature style of traditional quilts combined with contemporary fabrics like those of Kaffe Fassett. I have all of Mary Mashuta’s quilt books. Each one is a treasure; each one, better than the next.

This is a little embarrassing at my Modern QG meetings as most of the other members do tackle the quilting on their own. Fear about where to start and how not to ruin a quilt top I had just completed (and fallen in love with) stopped me in my tracks, so out the checkbook came and off my quilt top went to a quilter. I think that's all about to change for me thanks to Mary Mashuta's "Foolproof Walking-Foot Quilting Designs". I am EXCITED! The clear step by step instructions, a really unique way of "marking without actually marking" a quilt designs and fun photos showing where she draws her quilting design inspiration from are all things that inspire me and make me believe not only "I can do this", but "I'm going to love doing this!". Really good step-by-step photos and drawings PLUS "clock ratings" to indicate how time-consuming a particular design will be make it such a fun book to browse and start planning my attack on a UFO baby quilt (gotta start somewhere!). I am already getting excited to finally have something I made from start to finish! In my opinion, there are 2 kinds of quilt books - the ones that you buy for one "must do" project contained within and then pass along to a friend, and the "go-to" ones like "Foolproof Walking-Foot Quilting Designs" that you will go back to again and again for information and inspiration. I am happy to say that I really think I've got one of the second kind in this book. I wanted this book b/c I already own Mary Mashuta's Confetti Quilts which is probably the best color theory & design book I've come across to date. Keep sharing your knowledge Mary!
