The author did an awesome job of transforming her journey into a book filled with incredible experiences, people, and courage. She exudes passion for life and loving/helping others. Not only does she paint a picture of her life in Costa Rica, she opened my eyes to the possibilities out there for all of us. She re-energized my sense of adventure and desire to experience other cultures.

Inspiring Memoir about Starting a New Life in Costa Rica By penman This memoir will appeal to anyone who wants to start a new life in an exotic foreign country but worries that they don't have the finances or courage to do it. Debbie Rudd was 62 years old and living on a limited income as an ex-teacher when she packed her most important belongings in two suitcases and took them to Costa Rica to start that new life. Despite knowing very little Spanish at the time and only one person inside the country, she managed to find herself a house to rent and gradually integrate herself into "Tico" society, where she now enjoys rich friendships and continual adventures in a foreign culture. She faced challenges along the way, but overcame them with her sense of humor and optimistic nature, both of which shine through in her writing. One refreshing aspect of Debbie's style is that she writes simply and unpretentiously; a lot of the story unfolds in her interesting description of the people she meets along the way. The Costa Rica that you see through her eyes is an amazing place, with all the natural beauty shown in the travel magazines but also with loving people who care more about relationships than material possessions. At the end of this fast-paced, entertaining read, you will be inspired to say: yes, I too can do that!

Although I am a voracious reader, I just never have. I am writing this for two reasons, 1) I live in Costa Rica, and 2) I have read a lot of "How I moved to Costa Rica" books. This one is different, and notably so (no offense to the other authors). Debbie Rudd writes not about how to move, how much money it takes to live here, tips and tricks, etc, which all have their place and their audience. Debbie writes about falling in love with a country, embracing and being embraced by its people, about really living WITH Costa Ricans. It is an engaging and heartwarming tale of a courageous woman who came here to fully live in the culture, and as such, I find it unique, and I applaud it. Really learning Spanish (infinitely harder as you get older), pushing yourself to use it, opening to friendships and relationships, giving of yourself with enthusiasm, all are things the author has done, and her rewards are evident. I recommend this book for an understanding of another way to move to a new country. Well done!
