The authors share all their own flaws and weaknesses in service of helping the rest of us confront our own. This is an extraordinarily hopeful book for a reader in the throes of divorce; the authors lighten the pain with laughter and rueful self-assessment, and give clear guidance on how we each really can be our best selves in a difficult time. But even for those of us not going through divorce, the stories of how the authors work on their relationship are inspiring and revelatory. For anyone struggling in a relationship, this book would bring comfort and a fresh perspective. I'm going to gift this book to several friends. For a couple going through a divorce -- if each person had a copy of this book, they might at least have a foundation, a touch-stone for how to inflict the least damage possible. I hope many people discover this book and gift it to their divorcing friends. It could eliminate some suffering, both for the couple and for any children.

I've often told people that we're not an anomaly and now I can finally point them to this book for proof that not all divorces are train wrecks and not all stories disasters. Beautifully written with humor and grace, a must-read for anyone who has hope to keep their divorce less like a splashy tabloid and more like a restructured family.

In this slim memoir, Weiler and Menkens provide an honest and thought-provoking account of how their own marital failure became a divorce success story. Along the way, they discuss the agonizing decision of when to tell their daughter, how to work through joint custody arrangements and what steps they took to ensure she would not grow up scarred by her parents' divorce. But more than that, this book offers candid details of the work Weiler and Menkens did in couple’s therapy -- work they believe paved the way for a positive, productive and life-giving relationship after the marriage ended. Anyone contemplating divorce and wanting to avoid the hit-and-run scenarios so often dished up in popular media would do well to read this book for an example of a new paradigm – one that takes the lifelong work of human relationships seriously.
