Today she is living and working in Hamburg as a copywriter for one of Germany s most successful and biggest accredited advertising agencies. The text is spare but witty and informative. However, the images that are the main point of this coffee table book are wonderful and get more so the further you go back in time. There are rare Tin toys, pop-up books, and backgammon boards are crafted by true artists. You will get smacked by waves of nostalgia whenever you cross an item you have completely forgotten. There are a very few omissions in Vintage Toys, but given the rich history of its topic, it’s surprising how satisfyingly the book covers more than 170 essential items. By the way, this slip-cased edition conscientiously includes a bonus game of Nine Men’s Morris playable on the book’s back cover. You won't be disappointed, highly recommended!

About the Author Vos was born in the Netherlands an emigrated to the USA in 1881. He earned degrees from Calvin Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Strasbourg (Ph.D. in Arabic). In 1894 he was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church in the USA. Before beginning his 39-year tenure on Princeton's faculty, he was professor of systematic and exegetical theology at Calvin for five years.

A Vosian Masterpiece By Gras Duibh Geerhardus Vos, the great professor of Biblical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, is certainly no easy read! Perhaps it is because Dutch was his first language, or perhaps it is because of the depth of material, but those who do carefully wade through his work will find themselves the better for it. The Teaching of Jesus Concerning Kingdom of God and the Church is no exception to that statement.Vos' purpose in the book was to demonstrate that a biblical concept of the Kingdom of God that was in the mind of the Jews when Jesus announced that the Kingdom was now present was less than adequate. Indeed, the Kingdom Jesus announces is new and its presence brought in something more than the reign of law in which the Jews found their ideal, and more than a national entity by which Israel would gain their glory and supremacy. Moreover, it is more than just the place where God's sovereignty is unmeasurably experienced and understood. Rather, it is supremely and ultimately the realm of God's work of salvation, which has to do with delivering individuals from the powers of Satan, darkness, and the world. And thus, Vos shows that the Kingdom of God is primarily a spiritual entity with a spiritual and moral force (thus it is connected to God's righteousness) that is otherworldly. From that, Vos demonstrates the NT understanding of the Kingdom as it manifests itself in the Church leading on to its eschatological fulness when Jesus returns. Thus, salvation comes as a result of realizing the Kingdom and its King.Of real importance is the chapter devoted to various misconceptions regarding the Kingdom, both in its present and future presence. Since is it primarily spiritual and heavenly, it is wrong to try to make the Kingdom a national and political force. On the other hand, we must be careful against relegating the Kingdom merely to the sphere of the ethical summed up by love. Modernists and liberals seek to make all religion have the same goal: teaching people how to be better people. Vos went against the message of then popular but controversial preacher, Henry van Dyke, especially as he stated his theology in his popular hymn, "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee," where he wrote, "Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine; Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine." However, the teaching of Jesus in the Kingdom is that no one is able to better themselves enough for God's righteousness without the work of God in their lives. Vos is careful as he forcefully demonstrates that the Kingdom is a supernatural thing that brings God's grace in salvation.This book is not large, but it will require serious thought and careful reading. But it will help the reader in discovering the great truths about the Church itself that is often neglected in this present day. It will create a love for the Church and an appreciation for what became a motto of the early church (If you want God for a Father, you must have the Church for a mother).

15 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Difficulty level extremely high By A. Scott Cunningham No doubt, this is an excellent book. The problem with the book isn't so much the book itself, but the difficulty of the ideas and the syntax of Vos' writing style. I am left with the distinct impression that this book *cannot* be read casually or at leisure. It is a serious book that demands a serious reader. My review, then, is not so much a review, as much as it is a practical piece of advice for the interested reader. Be prepared to be confused, or at the least, to have to fight fiercely to gain an understanding of Vos's ideas. I will need to read this book again one day, as my first time reading wasn't too beneficial. Everything went over my head (whew! There, I said it! My darkest secret!), which is unfortunate for me, I'm sure.

400 of 404 people found the following review helpful. The easiest and best feng shui book available! By TVDIVA I have over 2 dozen books on feng shui, and they all left me confused and frustrated. Which feng shui system should I use? Where the heck is my prosperity corner? Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life knocks all the other feng shui books off my book shelves. The others try to be mystical, philosophical, and pay homage to their feng shui masters. Move Your Stuff just gets down to business with a lot of humor, and a lot of great information (that I did not find in the other so-called expert feng shui books.) I admit I had lots of accumulated clutter to clear before I could think about arranging my work and living quarters for optimum prosperity and well being. However, it was easy once I read each chapter as outlined for each of the segments of feng shui (fame and reputation, prosperity, love and marriage, etc.) One of the best things in the book is that Karen explains how to determine if there is a problem, and what you need to do to resolve it. She makes it clear - fixes are not just physical - they are mental and emotional, too. You must be clear in your intent to improve your life and take the necessary steps yourself. No one can take action for you. But Move Your Stuff can sure give you great guidelines for making positive energy flow in your life again. Try it. I promise your energy will increase and your circumstances will improve as you take feng shui actions to improve your life.

137 of 140 people found the following review helpful. Practical (and fun) Feng Shui! By A Customer I've bought several books on Feng Shui, and this is the first one that actually makes sense! Yes, it's probably simplistic in its presentation of a complex topic and practice, but finally I got practical tips and tricks to immediately implement--on my own. Almost immediately after implementing some of her suggestions as well as some ideas of my own using her info, things started changing in my life. I hadn't realized how stuck the energy was in my house until I could feel it moving! I feel energized and motivated instead of exhausted and mired in mud. I also realized that things were basically where we had put them out of the moving boxes 5 years ago; now things are beginning to be put in their place, where it feels right for them to be--and I am finding such enjoyment in seeing them there. I think I will still call in an expert at some point (our powder room is in our prosperity gua, and there's a piece missing!), but I really am having fun doing a lot of it on my own. I highly recommend this book. It's a quick and easy read, and even funny sometimes.

By Marion People are used to my wacky stories about my family, but my new favorite wacky stories are about Feng Shui.I read this book with much skepticism....but thought, "Hey, it can't hurt, right?" A few years ago, a Feng Shui practicing friend of mine asked me if I closed the toilet lid when I flushed...I said, "Sometimes, but not always...." and she replied, "You're FLUSHING away your wealth!" I had a good laugh, but decided to try it. I began religiously to put the toilet seat down...and got an unexpected check in the mail from the IRS that year. Let me just say that has never happened before or since.I decided to bone up on Feng Shui and did a Bagua map of my home and saw that my wealth area was my back bedroom which was in maxed out disarray due to a flooding problem which had recently been fixed. I took a week off from work and totally remodeled the room....even put new furniture in....and my husband got a nice raise! I know, it sounds crazy... but I think, in part, having an orderly home free of clutter destresses you and helps you become more peaceful and therefore more productive and happy.This was a great book. I can't comment on the love part as I've been married forever (but still love him), but I'm sure it can't hurt to try either! I highly recommend this book, if for no other reason, to get your home decluttered and more organized.

By paulbolton Gardner is clearly an expert in his knowledge of Blake and the setting of his life. This seems to includean encyclopedic knowledge of Blake's acquaintances. His assessment of Blake's understandings andphilosophies in the contemporary context is impressive. However, the outpouring of Gardner's vast knowledgeoften detracts from the biographic intent (if there is one). The reader who does not share Gardner's impressiveunderstanding of Blake will find this work at times difficult to follow or fully appreciate.For decades I have had an intrinsic and indescribable attraction to Blake's work. I had hoped to obtain somedefinitive factual insight into relevant details of his life. I did learn something more from Gardner's work butnot as much as I had hoped to. After the reading I have a broader general image of Blake's life that is weak onspecifics.
