A dog book for the 99%, The Dog Walker is a hugely entertaining look at the world’s greatest job—by an activist who spent a decade as a dog walker for the political class   Dog walking: it’s every eight-year-old’s dream! You spend your day outdoors; you interact exclusively with silly, loving, ridiculous dogs; and you get paid for it. But the reality is . . . well, actually, the reality is pretty great, too, at least according to the anarchist Joshua Stephens’s eye-opening account of the dog walker’s life. An Anthony Bourdain of the dog walking set, Stephens reports on what every master of the trade—and every informed consumer—needs to know: always keep a spare set of keys, always have references, and never, ever board your beloved pet. But Stephens also goes deeper: he shows us what dog walking reveals about everything from gentrification to street harassment, and why radical empathy must always anchor every interaction—canine or otherwise. Rich with hilarious anecdotes, brilliant observations, and a powerful political conscience, The Dog Walker calls to mind David Rakoff at his most sardonic—if, that is, Rakoff had been an anarchist who walked dogs for a living. An irreverent and perceptive fish-out-of-water story, The Dog Walker is totally irresistible.

The Dog Walker: An Anarchist's Encounters with the Good, the Bad, and the Canine, by Joshua Stephens

Review “Stephens coyly admits he has routinely done everything from laundry in his clients’ homes to napping, showering, hosting book clubs and, yes, having a lot of sex...Approaching 40, Stephens has aged out of the full-time dog-walking game, but he has retained a youthfulness in his expressions of rage against capitalism, racism and inequality in all its forms...Ultimately, in his view, we’re all animals trying to get by and find as much comfort in a cold world as we can. And he’s more than willing to hump in your bed to make that point.”—Maclean's“Documenting a trade that falls somewhere between bike messenger and nanny, Joshua Stephens explores politics and power, equality and class, the essential rhythms of walking city streets, the meaning of work, and the depth of connection available to us if we choose to take part. Part warmth and wag, part snarl, The Dog Walker is sharp, fast, and above all, human.”—Nina MacLaughlin, author of Hammer Head: The Making of a Carpenter“Joshua Stephens spent years walking dogs, but more to the point: he spent years looking at the world around him. I am grateful he did, because his observations about how we conduct our daily lives are deeply insightful. Be careful with this book: below the surface, it boils with political fervor and social commentary too often left out of our public discourse.”—DW Gibson, author of The Edge Becomes the Center: An Oral History of Gentrification in the Twenty-First Century“The Dog Walker takes you gently by the hand, artfully guiding you on a captivating journey that appears to be good fun, which it certainly is. But don’t miss the forest for the trees. Take your time strolling. This tale is not so much about pups, poop, or the people who are paid to tend to both—though you’ll find that, too. It’s about what makes us most human, most humane: the politicized, lived practice of empathy. A pure treat, with heart!”—Cindy Milstein, author of Anarchism and Its Aspirations“With a raconteur’s skill, an anarchist’s heart, and a biting wit, Joshua Stephens regales us with tales of punk bohemia, social issues street philosophy, and dog walking. A hilarious, thoughtful, and engaging slice of life just under our noses—dogs and all.”—Scott Crow, author of Black Flags and Windmills “A thoughtful, odd, amusing (albeit occasionally precious) fusion of memoir, career guide, and anarchist screed with built-in appeal for snake people.”—Kirkus Reviews

About the Author JOSHUA STEPHENS's writing has appeared in AlterNet, Truthout, NOW Lebanon, Jadaliyya, and Perspectives on Anarchist Theory.

This is a really fun and informative read By James Birmingham First a quick disclaimer: I am the James Birmingham mentioned in the beginning of the book - so, maybe a little bias here. This is a really fun and informative read; perfect for a dog lover or anyone looking for a funny, yes informative read.Joshua does a brilliant job distilling topics like Situationist geography and the EZLN into the vernacular and out of typical Ivory Tower jargon - and pairs these seamlessly other topics such as sex, mishaps, and dog poop.

The title doesn't really prepare you for what is inside this funny, interesting, informing and deceptively moving book. Sections about farting follow sections about systemic injustices, which all leads to sections about dog poop, finally ending in sections about the pain of existence. You will rip through this book in a day or two. However when you're finished you'll wish you had read it slower. Thankfully, since you bought the book, you can read it again whenever you like! Huzzah!

By Amazon Customer As a quick disclaimer, reading about Joshua Stephen's dogwalking collective in the Washington Post was my inspiration in forming my own. I follow his social media and am consistently floored by his knowledge and razor-sharp wit. This book is not exactly what you might think. Sure...it is some insight into what the life of a dogwalker is like, but more importantly it is a look into what life for many unrepresented or invisible people is like. This book is an eloquent, tender, and often laugh-out-loud journey through the streets of DC, New York, Chiapas, and beyond. Part memoir, part commentary, and part manifesto, this is essential reading absolutely for anybody and not only in pet care. At the very least not one person is better for not reading his chapter on loss.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. If you have 2015 edition (or 2014!) just don't waste your money By Ford Ka I had a bad premonition when I opened the volume. On the first page of the catalogue the only change is a larger map of Afghanistan. Everything else is the same. Not a trace of new circulating magnetic 10 leke (2009) and 20 leke (2012) coins even though 2012 commemoratives have been added. Algeria? Commemorative 200 dinars 2012 missing. Andorra? Up to 2013, not a trace of 2014 euro issue. Aruba? No 2014 new circulating coins with the new king. Azerbaijan listing includes all coins issued up to 2006. Brazil starts with a gold 10 reis (actually, it should be reais), lower denominations follow. Guatemala misses some 2010 coins. Kazakhstan ends in 2011. Lithuania does not include 25 litu denomination. Norway ends in 2012. Pakistan 25 paisa is actuallly 25 rupees. As if to balance missing coins the editors generously threw in some coins not heard of anywhere else such as Morocco 5 santimat 2011 or Morocco 25 centimes (???) 2002. Some coins are listed twice e.g. Iran #1276 (or #1278) and 1277 (or #1279). Some prices are out of touch with reality (Monaco 2 euro #195 2011 and #200 2013 are available at 10% of current Krause prices, not a surprise as the mintages exceed one milion of each). I won't bore you with further examples but it seems to me that there is something wrong in the listings of every country. Some years ago I realised that Krause is in trouble when the 20th century edition I bought was printed without several chapters (including such a minor country as Spain...) which I later received by e-mail. It has only gotten worse. This catalogue is simply not ready for publication, information which can be easily obtained on the Internet is missing. The information can probably be also obtained directly from mints or banks - why wasn't it? Wasn't there enough people in the publishing house to write the necessary e-mails? I can't tell. What I can do is this: give you a piece of advice. If you already have 2014 or 2015 edition, don't bother buying the 2016 one. It is not worth the price. However, if you collect world coins and you haven't got a catalogue yet, there is no better one on the market. I am very sad to admit it - with Krause lowering its standards the world have just gotten a little worse. My advice to the editors is this - don't publish another edition until you are certain you are ready!

62 of 63 people found the following review helpful. like really really pretty By Alexandra The cover is gorgeous, like really really pretty. The book is fine; the difference with most home decor books is that this one doesn't only show pictures of nicely decorated dwellings, but it also works as a guide to choose your house and to decide which style suits you best and how to accomplish it. The pictures are nice and bright and the size is fine. It is not like those huge coffee table books but it is big enough to display it in your living room. The reason I gave it four stars is because it has a design problem that can't be overlooked in a book about design and aesthetics. Because of a poorly performed diagramming, there are incomplete sentences. Some paragraphs are just cut by the pictures and you have to guess what's written. It's hard to believe that no one noted this "detail" before sending this book to the printing. I must say it's very disappointing.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. If you are considering moving and want to design every part of your home this book has some useful information. It focuses less By G. Recipient When I first got this book I was expecting a book on how to decorate an apartment. This seemed reasonable based on the title and cover. However I was missing a bit of information, that Apartment Therapy is a large blog that has put out at least two books. This book is much more about decorating a house than an apartment. The beginning actually goes over what types of houses there are and what to look for. If you are considering moving and want to design every part of your home this book has some useful information. It focuses less on working with the space you have in a creative and useful way, and more shows you lots of pictures of beautiful homes with lots of space to do whatever they wanted. If you were living in an apartment about half of this book wouldn't actually apply to you. It focuses a lot on how paint colors, and floor types really make a space come together. The second half of the book which is more about decorating, doesn't offer much advice. It has beautiful pictures of various spaces, but not much advice. However, I did enjoy the book. It has examples of different decorating styles, and sample color palettes. I think it could be helpful to figure out what style you actually like style wise. Maybe put a name to that style to better be able to express it.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. I was really disappointed in this book By love2dazzle I was really disappointed in this book. I have an apartment and I am always looking for a good way to decorate and rearrange the design of the apartment. I felt like "Apartment Therapy Complete and Happy Home" is made for houses. There really isn't a lot of apartment options in the book. I think the tips were great. How to properly hang art and do window treatments. I don't have a lot of room to work with. There was information about gardening and swimming pools and I live in an apartment complex, I can't do anything with the lawn, garden, or swimming pool. It is really just another book about homes not about apartments. I think the title is definitely deceiving.

By Amazon Customer Shipping container living is really popular nowadays because of expensive housing prices. The only problem with this is, it is too small and organizing becomes very difficult due to lack of space. This book helped me understand the benefits and disadvantages of living in a storage container home and uncovered the details on how I can go from overcrowded to well organized by taking advantage of hidden storage locations in my home. The tips and tricks are brilliant and easy to follow. I loved the images and the way everything was explained. It's really inspiring and helped me not to regret for my decision to move into a smaller space....

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very good. By sci-fi lover Pretty comprehensive. Especially great about decorating and furnishing. Really good info on finding, assessing, angled buying containers. I would recommend.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive? Not quite By wewally The writer has little or no knowledge about container living. It's a book about ideas that should be considered, hence the two stars.

Every winter throughout Spain it is estimated that up to one hundred thousand hunting dogs are abandoned or killed at the end of the hare-coursing season when they are no longer needed, perform badly, or are too old. This book portrays dogs that have been rescued and sets them against the landscapes in Spain where they are typically abandoned. Shot in a style that references the tone and mood of Velázquez, who painted at a time when these dogs were treated with great respect, Martin Usborne's photographs show both the classical beauty of the animals and the ugliness of their modern situation.

How to Amaze Your Son: Crafts, Recipes and Other Creative Experiences to Teach Him to See the Extraordinary in the Ordinary, by Raphaele Vidaling

Review What a fantastic book... There are some duplicates between the girls and boys book, but enough differences you'll want both. (Lisa Day Inside Toronto 2015-10-28)Vidaling's playful books focus on exploring creativity with children through commonplace items, such as found natural objects, food, cardboard, and upcycled materials. Both volumes (Reviewed with How To Amaze Your Daughter) include a number of activities, crafts, and simple experiments perfect for a rainy afternoon or a parent-child playdate. Adults may remember some of these projects from grade school... The directions are simple enough for older children to follow on their own, and parents won't be frustrated with the projects or the results (but some may get a little messy). Though the two books are divided by gender, and each contains projects that are stereotypically geared toward boys or girls, most of the projects are gender-neutral or easy to adapt to suit any child's interests... Parent-child craft books are popular, and the projects in these books are appropriate for a wide range of age levels, from preschoolers to tweens. Parents and caregivers will enjoy exploring their children's creative side with these projects. (Library Journal 2015-11-01)

Introduction

"All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." This sentence is Picasso's. But what is an artist? Someone who looks at the world with a curious eye, gifted with a creativity that transforms raw material into poetry? Yes, children have this talent, this perpetual wonder that makes them enthusiastic for new experiences, capable of investing themselves in a little project with as much enthusiasm and seriousness as they would if their life depended on it: making soap bubbles or paper airplanes, tying a remote-control motor to a stuffed animal on wheels, or making a skirt of flowers to put around a little doll. Playing is about inventing, testing, letting your imagination and concrete experiences rub up against one another. And, in the end, it's about growing as well. Only while growing up, we sometimes lose our open mind. We throw out bottle caps without seeing the possibility of them being wheels: we no longer pick up feathers on the sidewalk. Sometimes, even, we forget to sculpt volcanoes in our mashed potatoes! That is, we forget unless we have the chance to have children of our own, who remind us not to neglect the most important things: play, fantasy and making wonderful things for the sake of making something wonderful!

This book is a helping hand for parents who haven't lost their inner child, for those who, between the "brush your teeth" and "don't forget to say thank you" will add the essential insight: "Never forget to see the extraordinary in the ordinary!"

I do like the book, but feel that many of the crafts, recipes, and experiments are geared for a slightly younger age. The book is brimming with 50 fun, exciting, and creative projects that you can do together. I like that idea - the concept of bonding with your son, especially for fathers and sons. The great thing about these is that they're inexpensive and they're also easy - a big plus. You also don't have to go out in search of pvc pipe or plumber's glue and other odd items. Most of these can be done with things you already have in your home - like matches, potatoes, etc. You and your son will enjoy learning new things as you perform magic tricks, create cool recipes, and conduct fun science experiments. This really feeds into a boy's innate sense of curiosity and will be a big hit with boys between the ages of 5-10.

By C'est Moi I have both this book and the "How to Amaze Your Daughter" version, and while both have their merit I like this one slightly less. The book has instructions for cutesy little projects and experiments. There are some you can do together, decorations, things that can be played with, some are "experiments", and some can be eaten.Though the boy and girl versions differ in a lot of ways, both have a few experiments/crafts in common, such as: kokedama hanging Japanese gardens (pictures vary but directions are identical), round candleholders (wax for girls an ice for boys), moon phases made from Oreos (exactly the same), and more. I'm actually glad I got both because there are plenty of projects that both boys and girls could like. The experiments and recipes especially seem like they could go either way.In each book I found about the same amount of projects that I love and I know my daughter will too, but between the two this one has more duds. Some ideas that I don't like include: "A Drum Kit Made from Small Tin Cans" because it involves opened metal cans and their tops, which can get rusted and possibly cut kids; "A Ball Forest with Surprises Inside", which would have you put sticks from outside into homemade snacks (kind of unsanitary imo, plus may have pesticides, insects, etc.); and "A Mobile Made of Cheese Doilies to Eat with No Hands" because it involves putting thin metal wires into food, which can go badly with kids. Then again, there are a lot of good ideas overall. I'd recommend getting both books if you have boys and girls, but I still prefer the other one.

Fun Craft Book for Boys AND Girls By Katherine Chan With both a son and a daughter in the house, I thought it very fitting to have the opportunity to review both How to Amaze Your Son and How to Amaze Your Daughter. Both books are chock full of fun activities to do with your kids, and while the books specify "how to amaze your son/daughter", I found that many of the activities in both books were fairly gender neutral and would work for both boys and girls. That said, there were some obvious differences where I can see the author trying to categorize the books specifically for boys or girls. There is only one completely repeated activity from the How To girls version in this book, and the activities. The single activity that is exactly the same with the same photo art and instructions is the final activity in the book - The Phases of the Moon made from sandwich cookies. There is some overlap in activities, such as the Art of Kokedama, the tee pee, the house under the table, and the ice wreath/archaeologists' ice floe, but I can safely say that most of the activities are completely different. I've included the table of contents below if you're interested in seeing what exactly is in the book. One big difference between the boys and girls version of this book is that the girls version features a lot of doll activities while the boys features activities that involve fire. I don't recall any fire activities in the girl's book, and there certainly were no mentions of dolls in the boys book. This was a little off putting, but I think the author was trying to aim for the majority here - many girls do like dolls and many boys like fire I guess. That was probably my only gripe with these books - but that said, there are a lot of activities in the boys book which some would categorize as "girl activities" such as sewing (shark pencil case) and baking (all the many cakes), and there were many activities in the girls book that would some would categorize as "boy activities" such as playing with rubber eggs or performing magic tricks (water upside down trick). I let my kids know that the title of the book meant nothing - it probably would have done the author good to simply name the books "How to Amaze Your Kids, book 1 and 2".The Sons book had one activity that I felt should have been removed from the list - the Drum Set made from small tin cans. Activity has one part where you're to make cymbals from the cut lids of tin cans. Now I don't know about you, but I cut myself on a tin an edge before and it hurts like crazy. If your kid tries to make, or is playing with this drum set, chances are they'll get hurt. The activities in the book were overall very good - the difficulty level ranged from very simple to "you will probably be making most of the project". We tried out a few and both kids really enjoyed the projects. The book is full of beautiful photographs and simple, but accurate, instructions. Many of the items to complete the projects you can find in your house and don't require special purchases. This is actually quite a nice book to add to the craft shelf. The kids are already asking when we can do another project from here!Table of Contents3D HAND that's easy to drawLITTLE MEN made from sprouted potatoesA STAR BOX made from a cola bottleTURNING A WALK INTO ART simple and freeRETOUCHED PHOTOS or what if we drew on my little brother?THE ART OF KOKEDAMA hanging Japanese gardensAN ALPHABETICAL SHELF made from yogurt containersBALLS OF ICE lit from the insideDECORATIONS AND OTHER LITTLE PRECIOUS THINGSA SMALL MYSTERIOUS DOOR that hides and electrical outletA FLYING FISH made from a sprouted onionA BOOK WITH A SECRET HIDING PLACE that dates back to a time of real treasuresA PEANUT TROPHY for vegetarian huntersA FRUIT CRATE TREE HOUSE perched in a stalk of broccoliA SHARK PENCIL CASE with metal teethMINIATURE CHAIRS made from champagne corksA DRUM KIT made from small tin cansA DREAM CATCHER personalizedTWO KINDS OF SURPRISE BOXES the disguised cans/a box of chocolates with no chocolateA GHOST made from starched fabricFOR PLAYINGA MUMMY contortionistA TREE HOUSE made of cardboardMULTICOLORED MADELEINES made from wax crayonsA TEEPEE made from an old sheetAN ICE WREATH from prehistoric timesA BALLOON ROCKET with a secret messageA HOUSE UNDER THE TABLE made with paper tableclothsA TINY HOUSE made from a grapefruitTHE GAME OF MOLKKY a cross between bowling and bocceA CATAPULT made from popsicle sticksA JUNGLE CAVE made with rock paperEXPERIMENTS AND MAGIC TRICKSA LITTLE CHEMISTS CRATERS an experiment with baking sodaAN ICEBERG made of microwaved soapA MAGICAL MERRY GO ROUND of matches that rise by themselvesFIRE THAT DRINKS WATER or an experiment that reveals submerged treasureFAKE SNOW made from shaving cream and corn starchBETTER THAN CANDLES for a birthday cakeAN EXPERIMENT WHERE A CABBAGE LEAF changes colorSEPARATING YOLK FROM THE WHITE with the help of a bottleCANDLE MADE FROM A CLEMENTINE with no wick or wax - and it smells greatAND YOU CAN EAT IT!PLAYMOBIL ICE POPS that can stand upHONEY PANCAKES shaped like beesCHOCOLATE CROISSANTS rolled in five minutesCOCKTAIL DECORATIONS made of apples for the kids' happy hourA BALL FOREST with surprises insideA LANDSCAPE CRACKER that you're allowed to breakCHEESE LOLLIPOPS guaranteed to be sugar freeA MOBILE MADE OF CHEESE DOILIES to eat with no handsBABYBEL FAMILY or sculptures you can eatSPAGHETTI HOT DOGS a food experimentA FORTIFIED CASTLE CAKE made almost entirely of chocolateA MOON CAKE with lychee cratersA CAMPFIRE CAKE with marshmallow embersCAGES MADE OF SPUN SUGAR to decorate a cakeA MOUNTAIN CAKE and its climbersTHE PHASES OF THE MOON made from sandwich cookies
