I was able to color using Copic markers and it turned out just as I expected. I love the size of the book. The designs fill the page perfect and easy to color without taking the page out. I'm positive I will buy this particular design book again. If you travel a lot I highly recommend the pocket coloring book. Easily fits in bag with pens while traveling.

Frichter This is a very nice book for novices and for all Maltese lovers to add to their library. The book captures the many charming facets of the Maltese and their zest for life and love of their families. I do note that many of the pictures in the book are very dated. While the Maltese standard remains the same, the style of the Maltese has evolved over the years so they currently look differently than many of the pictured dogs. The author presented the material so it is easily relatable to all readers. The Resource Section is informative, and even "long time Maltesers" can learn something from this handy book.

By Black Lab's Mom Reading "MALTESE" brought back many memories of how little I knew when we took in our first Maltese, a 10 month old totallydeaf little white puppy. I wanted to do everything right for him but knowing only bigger dogs, I had so much to learn. Being able to check outneeded supplies, health tips, grooming points, training hints and so many other topics available in this book would have made learningso much easier. What fun it was to enjoy reading the information while smiling at the beautiful photos and checking out "Be Aware" and"Dog Tale" notes! "MALTESE" covers the Maltese Experience and is a tribute not only to the breed but most of all to those we have lovedand who loved us back...Our MALTESE!

For that I give it 4 solid stars. I've lived in small apts. most of my life, so I could appreciate some of the helpful hints provided by the author here. I just don't think this is such a strong need to devote a book to. But it is clever, and the writing is good. Enjoyable read for someone who likes to help others with design or space saving tips.

By Roxanne As a beginner grower I've been researching everything I can about growing cannabis and it's very confusing with everyone's input. But when I purchase this book on Amazon and read its contents, I felt like I gained a lot of knowledge on how to grow this kind of plan properly. Lovely projects, good illustrations, unusual presentation By Jane in Milwaukee I collect needlework books and don't know if I more like the old classics or brand new books like this that may be bound to become a classic. Very many books are being published by Japanese designers recently and their perspective adds a different dimension to our Western ways. Omigosh! I just learned a new word: atelier. (I have a BA in English so I have no business not knowing this word!) It's first mentioned in the Introduction where author Kazuko Aoki relates that her first interest is her garden and from that stemmed her desire to capture its beauty in needlework. It's the ever-changing plants and flowers of the season that keep this endeavor always fresh."Atelier" means an artist's or designer's studio or workshop and Ms. Aoki encourages us to begin with a journal or diary of plants and flowers we like and translate them into potential drawings and then needlework designs. We are first presented with a pretty photo of her Garden Diary which is covered with embroidered linen with images of several plants, a spade, topiary, watering can, and garden boots. She says she began keeping this diary when she first started gardening and she uses it to reminisce on what she's done, to memorialize what she is currently doing and to make notes on what she would like to do in the future. She explains how to make this journal later on in the book. (A huge problem, though, is that she gives no clue about the pages of the journal. She doesn't talk about covering a printed book and I have no idea if all the pages are made of linen like the front and back cover where she practices stitches or if they're paper upon which she writes and draws. It's probably the latter but it's not good that she doesn't display the inside of the journal and the list of materials gives you no clue.)The book is very well laid out: she begins with Spring and each season is covered over 8 to 10 pages. Each season has a paragraph discussion of what flowers excite her for that season and pictures 7 embroidered flowers on the left-hand page and then a larger picture of a wreath of completely different flowers also of the season on the right-hand page. Spring and Summer also have a picture to stitch with a bunch of flowers together and every season has not only individual stitched pictures on linen but also cute projects like frogs or bugs on throw pillows or a linen-covered cork board with pockets for notes and letters and bands to hold other paper. You could also pin paper onto the board.She shows detailed photos of how she get inspiration from her garden and translates them into sometimes 3-D designs. (Again, though, she shows a bunch of butterflies with raised wings and I can't tell if that's stumpwork or not. The whole back of the book is the patterns for all the projects which could have been improved if they weren't so fine and with quite small-font labels and directions.In her stitch "catalog" (as opposed to guide), she diagrams 19 different stitches: although they cover only two pages, they're remarkably easy-to-follow.The most unusual part of the book though is "Kazuko's Stitch Lessons" on pages 49-52. These begin with standard Material's and Tools; then Basic Techniques of transferring designs onto fabric and using a hoop; then Extra Techniques like how to use applique and needle felting; and finally Lessons on Finer Points like how best to make French knots, weaving stitch, and work with ribbon embroidery.The single best thing in the entire book to me is the "Secret Finishing Techniques" on page 51. The displays how she finishes framed pieces: sprays them with a very fine mist of water and uses a wet Q-tip to "fix" the stitches by carefully smoothing them down, gently enough not to make them fuzzy. She shows that this is the best way to make satin stitches be perfectly parallel and neaten all other stitches. The important part to me is the clear flower and insect patterns which are divided among the four seasons. The photographs of the completed work are lovely, and clear enough to see the original stitches. The directions to replicate the work are clear and complete. It is important to me that the directions also include the DMC thread numbers so that if the directions are followed the work actually looks like the photographs. OK. my needlework is not that as exquisite as Kazuko Aoki's but at least the shape and colors are true to the photographs. Directions for each stitch are also given in bold and easy stages.I embroidered a row of delicate flowers along a pillowcase for my pre-teen granddaughter and she loves it. I practice on pillow cases just above the border because I hate to practice on scraps and then toss it. This time I may have to place a row of the delicate flowers along several plain white cases because every kid in the family wants one. I am so happy to find this book. It is different from the color drenched Elizabethan things I've beendoing.This book is perfect for beginners and for the really experienced.

Better Writing, " has done it again By Dale Smith Best-selling historical novelist Libbie Hawker, the author of the superb non-fiction book "Take Off Your Pants: Outlining Your Novel For Faster, Better Writing," has done it again. Her latest guide for writers, "Making It In Historical Fiction," lays out how not only how to write historical novels that resonate with readers and give them what they are looking for, but also how to package and promote your books. Hawker walks you through the process of picking a period to write about, what appeals to readers, the importance of series, how to approach research, branding, packaging and much more.I have had a passion for history since I was a child, have a degree in history, devour histories and historical novels. I have even had several author friends ask me when I was going to write historical fiction, yet I held off from doing so because I felt I could never know enough, that the research required would take far too long, etc. Hawker's book has put those fears to rest. Her advice on handling research is excellent, both before and especially during drafting. Her process, and her market and reader analysis provides a great road map to writers considering historical fiction. The book is also encouraging and filled with infectious enthusiasm."Making It In Historical Fiction," has truly inspired me to begin my own series at long last. It's the perfect companion to her previous writing guide, "Taking Off Your Pants." I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Overall very good, but needs more information for promotion strategies By The LIterary Critic ProsThe two most important points I got from this book is that historical fiction (HF) authors have a tough time because they have been slow to adopt self-publishing, and that it is possible to make it as a mid-list author if you focus on self-publishing (and are patient and really productive). The upshot is that as a group, they are looking into the past (!) and hoping for a good traditional publishing deal, which is an endangered species.Second, Hawker shows through her own experience (and ability to quit her day job) that making it as a mid-list is author is possible. Anyone who is familiar with traditional publishing probably knows that mid-listers are also endangered; in the past they were able to have a viable career, but like the elusive traditional publishing deal, they are becoming rarer.Hawker also provides tropes that are specific to creating HF such as how much historic detail to add and how to weave historical detail into a scene. She does give specifics on covers that pertain to HF, such as graphic and font elements that help package your book in the most saleable way.She discusses research: how much to do and when to quit since most HF authors suffer from analysis paralysis, and they think they can’t write a story until they know EVERYTHING about a period. An especially useful resource that Hawker mentions is M. K. Tod’s survey of HF readers. This survey provides insight into the reading preferences and habits of the HF audience.Hawker also suggests how to plan a series and the release of your books. She herself focuses on series because like most fiction genres, it’s probably easier for the writer to build up an audience base and easier to sell related items. For instance, if you write about ancient China then switch to pre-revolutionary France because YOU are interested in it, you may really damage your book sales.ConsHawker is an advocate of self-publishing, but has also traditionally published at least two books. I would have liked to see her reasoning behind choosing traditional publishing for these books? Additionally more names of successfully self-published HF authors would have been great.Finally, I was really hoping for specific actionable steps for promoting HF, but I didn’t come away confident that I learned how. Hawker states she’s had great success with advertising lists, but she doesn’t identify those lists by name, nor does she explain how to locate these lists. She notes that rather than giving you her advertising list (fair enough) she says start networking with other self-published authors to “piece together your own list of advertisers to try.”However, she also doesn’t tell you what networking sites to use to connect with authors. When you tell the reader in the description of your book you will explain how to make it in HF, promotion is a HUGE portion of that, and the reader needs and wants to know that valuable information. I’ve heard of bookbub and bookbaby, but I don’t’ know if they are equivalent, or if they are effective for HF writers. Some review and commentary of best places to advertise would have been good.Overall, the book is very good and a useful guide for hopeful HF self-pubilshers, but again, given than promotion is so important, I was hoping for more detail on that.

Huguley There aren't many craft books on writing historical fiction, but this one approaches the work in a positive and uplifting way. I felt encouraged by Hawker's approach in this text and I highly recommend this text to those who are just starting out in writing historical fiction. My only recommendation would be to include of a list of recommended historical books before the CTA (read the book to know what that is).
