Review Make it personal this Christmas with a bookful of fun projects aimed at tweens and teens who want to learn how to sew. Like the others in the FunStitch series this one starts with the basics on what to buy and using a sewing machine, and shows how much fun you can have making your own decorations and gifts. It explains simply how to use power tools like a sewing machine, domestic iron and hot glue gun so the young user respects them but learns not to fear them. As with all the titles in this series there is an emphasis on the feeling of accomplishment when you make something yourself, but asking for adult help is okay too; like using a “scary” tool it is all part of the process of learning. Most of the techniques you need to know are covered at the front which is a bit of an info dump if you deal with it all at once, but all the topics covered are the type you need to practice first. These are mostly sewing machine skills as well as making a pompom and working with fusible web. Projects have difficulty ratings but because they are all Christmas related there are no themes or chapters. Each project has a large page-sized photograph of the finished item plus stages with photographs for foolproof crafting. There is a list of what you need, preparation plus a handy checklist of all the skills you need. I love this last touch and wish it was included in adult craft books too. Projects include a tree skirt, bunting, stocking, wreath, advent calendar, pillow, wrapping a gift in fabric etc. Not all the projects involve sewing and not all use fabric; there are paper options too and hand sewing as well as machine sewing gets covered. I think my own favorite has to be the plastic zoo animals dressed in their holiday best; a lovely idea to incorporate toys into the décor. This is a great way to get girls into making things and discovering what fun it is to personalize the holidays. I was looking for something more about the botanical science of small enclosed terrariums.That said, great photography, lovely layout, and lots of ideas for building attractive gardens.

I have used it as a blueprint for terrarium planting as well as a resource for the terrarium plants.Very thoughtful and entertaining reading.This is a favorite terrarium book of mine!

Beautiful and user-friendly By John Charlton This is a beautiful, stylish book written in a user-friendly and chatty manner that will inspire you to create gorgeous indoor miniature gardens for yourself and for friends. I started mine even before I finished reading the book. The photos are fabulous and a great help in visualizing your creation. If you don't want to give the terrarium away, give a copy of the book. I think it would be enjoyed by just about anyone!

Sparrow, MD I highly recommend this book for all beginner and most intermediate coin collectors. Jason Poe is a physicist and long time coin collector, who shares his knowledge and experience in this book. Basically, a collector has to be able to grade a coin in order to put a price on it. The grade depends on wear, luster, marks, eye appeal, and strike. Poe discusses how to evaluate these important aspects in an organized method, and near the end of the book pulls it all together into a systematic method. Along the way, the collector will learn about processes of die preparation and coin production, as well as things that are done to coins that affect their grade and value, such as cleaning and other alterations. This book is a fine companion to standard grading guides such as the ANA's or Photograde because it explains "why" coins look the way they do. Add a copy of Roger Burdette's "From Mine to Mint" to these and a beginning collector will have the start of a reference set that will serve them well for years. Some may be critical that the photo illustrations in the book are black and white, but they actually tie in well to the text and successfully illustrate the points that Poe is trying to make. There is a useful discussion of the Sheldon Grading scale and also of "market grading," and a glossary at the back of the book . At less than $20, this book is an excellent value.

This is essential to evaluating coins. Without understanding how they are made, one cannot evaluate what one sees. The metallurgy of coinage has a major impact on surfaces, devices, luster, and wear, and Poe shows a profound understanding of the process from ingot to your coin purse (or TPG slab). I find him a very knowledgeable source and it's fun to see that knowledge on display.If someone has ever made an obscure reference to a coin's condition, and you still have no idea what s/he even meant by that, this book will most likely answer the question in detail. The style is friendly and clear, with clear explanations of technical terms, and would be accessible even to a teen numismatist. The only minor improvements I could suggest would be slightly better proofreading and somewhat more polished typesetting, but neither of those detract from the overall value of the content.While I am familiar with the author from his many helpful answers on a forum we frequent, I neither sought nor was offered a review copy, because I knew I would be happy to purchase my own, and I was not disappointed. This review was therefore fully unsolicited.
