Grace has built her life on show horses. It's been a good life, too -- she mounts her wealthy students on European warmbloods, competes her horses on Florida's rigorous A-circuit, and runs the nicest barn in the neighborhood. Then, suddenly, it's the only barn in the neighborhood. As Grace's country town becomes a sun-drenched playground of pools and golf courses, she vows that no bulldozer will ever touch her farm. With her neighbors selling their farms and moving to more isolated corners of Florida, she finds herself fighting off land-hungry developers alone -- until Kennedy comes along. Kennedy is everything Grace doesn't want around her bustling show barn -- a pleasure rider who would rather wander in the woods than tackle a show-jumping course. Kennedy might make for an unlikely sidekick, but she's just the inspiration Grace needs to fight back against the developers who want to bulldoze her corner of Floridian wilderness -- and, eventually, against the wilderness itself.

A must-read for hunter-jumper riders By Mary Pagones Show Barn Blues brilliantly captures the bizarre social dynamic present at so many show barns: on one hand, on some level most professionals who work with horses are passionate about riding, otherwise they wouldn’t put up with the long hours, danger, and financial instability that is an inevitable part of the horse industry. On the other hand, staying in business means showing almost constantly and the decision to show is seldom a reflection of the amateur rider’s competence or the horse’s welfare—it means that the barn owner needs to make money off of the training fees, braiding fees, and pro rides that showing at a high level entails.Grace, the heroine of the novel, is a veteran rider, trainer, and barn owner who is struggling to stay afloat in a suburban world where horses increasingly seem irrelevant. Her shaky finances (and control freak nature) occasionally blind her to making the best decisions for her horses, including their need for some downtime and to just be horses riding around on a trail. Kennedy, a boarder Grace takes in only reluctantly out of desperation at the beginning of the book helps remind Grace why she loved riding so much in the first place while Grace teaches Kennedy some needed firmness about being a professional in the horse world. What I love so much about this book and all of Natalie Keller Reinert’s books is that there is no black and white when it comes to horses: it’s not like the people who show are bad and the people who trail ride are good. There are clearly strengths to both and a need for both freedom and discipline when it comes to horses. Making money is a part of life but focusing on winning blue ribbons alone can limit a rider’s development as a horsewoman.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves horse fiction that is willing to tackle serious themes with a sense of humor but particularly to hunter-jumper riders who will likely find themselves nodding and laughing as they recognize so many of the characters from their own ‘real life’ barns!

I LOVE the fact that's she's not young. Truly an adult herione. Yes, she's a control freak but what successful barn manager isn't? One also has to admire her fighting spirit. Barn life is full of constant worry and vigilance. I also think the back story of increasing urbanization is one to which many horse people can relate. Bridle paths are disappearing everywhere. It's a sad story in the real world but in this book there is hope at the end.As a longtime boarder, I also enjoyed reading about the dynamics between the various boarders. A barn is truly a microcosm of the world. I especially enjoyed the dynamic between Grace and Anna and how their relationship evolves. I look forward to reading more!

Anyone who has tried to make their living from working with horses knows how hard it can be, but very few equestrian novels actually take the time to realise this. In "Show Barn Blues" we meet a woman who has dedicated her life to horses, and is starting to wonder whether it has really been worthwhile. She still loves horses and riding, but is starting to lose some of the pleasure and passion that she first discovered as a child.Like all of Natalie's heroines, Grace is sometimes cranky and opinionated, but unlike Jules in "Ambition" (who I absolutely could not stand), Grace is a likeable character who makes good decisions. I suppose she is what Jules might one day be, if she can ever get that almighty chip off her shoulder! I see that a cross-over is coming up, and I hope that Grace is going to whip Jules well and truly into shape when that comes to pass.I couldn't put this book down, and I really enjoyed the cast, especially Kennedy and Anna. The characters' genuine love for their horses was felt throughout, and I loved the debate about the merits of trail riding vs arena riding. I know I would go mad if I was arena-bound, and my horse would too. Horses are not machines, and this book makes this point in a variety of ways. And I loved the pony appreciation - ponies are amazing, yet so often in American horse books they are treated as just being malicious or evil or only suitable for tiny children. You only have to look at the incredible ponies competing around the world to see that isn't true!

Every Living Thing (All Creatures Great and Small), by James Herriot

From School Library Journal YA-- A master storyteller continues the charming account of his experiences as veterinarian in rural Yorkshire. And although there are more cats and dogs as patients than before, there are plenty of large farm animals to deal with, frequently during the middle of the night. The detailed but succinct descriptions of people, places, and animals are a delight. Herriot's unusual ability to identify individual characters, both human and four-legged, brings them to life--even for the most urban American. The endearing strand weaving all episodes together is the constant devotion of man to animal and animal to man. Chapters are short, the pace is rapid, and the stories are very easy to read--perfect for unmotivated readers. The author's keen sense of humor will bring smiles to the faces of YAs, particularly when he tells a joke on himself. Nonfiction at its most entertaining best.- Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VACopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Reading Herriot's book is like listening to the stories of a very old friend. Familiar. Comforting. A little repetitious. His stories of veterinary work in the Yorkshire dales ( All Creatures Great and Small , LJ 8/72; All Things Bright and Beautiful , LJ 10/15/74) have brought to many city folk a sense of wonder and an understanding of the life of a country vet and his patients, both human and animal. In this collection, an older and perhaps more tired Herriot struggles with bad - tempered farmers, difficult diagnoses, an assistant who travels with a live badger, and his own pet cats, who will have nothing to do with him. While the stories and settings hark back to his previous works, the humor and spark are missing. The older Herriot struggles to maintain the wonder and merriment of his youth but gets bogged down in the mundane aspects of shopping for a house and seems numbed rather than heartbroken by the death of some of his patients. Demand will warrant multiple copies, but for the first-time Herriot reader, recommend his earlier works. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 5/15/92.- Debra Schneider, Virginia Henderson Internat. Nursing Lib., IndianapolisCopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Smashingly good sequel to the beloved veterinarian's earlier memoirs, and well worth the ten-year wait since The Lord God Made Them All. Although no exact dates are given, Herriot seems to pick up just where he left off, in the 1960's in rural Yorkshire, when veterinary medicine was still a barehanded, rough-and-tumble affair, with farm animals the main patients and infection a constant threat. (Herriot seems to spend half his time slipping on cow turds or with his arm up a cow's vagina, helping a birthing calf see the light of day.) The author's superbly gifted partner, Siegfried, is back, as is Herriot's loving wife, Helen. But the practice has expanded and much of the good feeling here involves two assistants: John Crooks, who goes on to become a world-class vet, and Calum Buchanan, eccentric supreme, who eats ducks with feathers attached and collects a menagerie of badgers, foxes, monkeys, and rabbits before setting out for Papua New Guinea. Herriot buys a house; dresses like a buffoon to save a client's farm; comes down with a dreadful cow disease; tends to our old friend Tricky Woo, Mrs. Pumphrey's spoiled Pekingese; and, in general, sheds his benign presence on a zooful of animals and a zooful of human beings. The milieu is deliciously familiar--``a dirty, dangerous job'' made glorious by ``the whole rich life.'' So is the moral--that love of animals is synonymous with love of human beings, and that there can never be too much of either. Crafted with foxy intelligence and angelic compassion: proof that for a ``vitnery'' in the Yorkshire dales, life is bliss--and bliss, too, for a few hours at least, for happy readers. More from the Yorkshire veterinarian the world loves By Joanna Daneman The late Alf Wight aka James Herriot left a legacy of books that excites readers to this day (and I presume will do so for decades more.) His gentle, self-deprecating style of humor and the portraits of the Yorkshire Dales farmers and country people are amusing and interesting. The four books, named after a hymn "All Creatures Great and Small" are joined by this fifth volume with similar stories. James (as Alf called himself) now has his own practice in Skeldale House, is married with two kids. The stories are very similar to the first four, with goof-ups, miracles, and funny tales. Somehow, these stories are not quite as hilarious as the first set, possibly because Mr. Herriot had written up most of the good stuff, or to represent the seriousness of raising two kids and having his own practice and being a settled man rather than a raw youth just out on his own. Nonetheless, if you lapped up all the "Creature" books, as I did, and you mourn the loss of Dr. Wight, who passed away in the 90's, then you will want to read these stories and vicariously enjoy more of the daily life of a country vet.

He chronicles the animals and people he helps as an active veternarian in Yorkshire, England. As such, the stories are usually more about the people and their attachment to their pets and livestock than they are about the animals themselves. Although the time period is not explicitly mentioned and he jumps around in time a great deal, this book seems to cover the period right after his preceeding book (The Lord God Made Them All), the late 50s and early 60s. Herriot's children are now 6-10 years old and play an increasing role in his practice. He also includes a touching series of stories about his and his wife's attempts to tame some farm cats. Every Living Thing was Herriot's final full-length original book, and it is an excellent end to an excellent series.

By A Customer Every Living Thing Every Living Thing portrays James Herriot as a simple man who impacts numerous people through his lifestyle and vigor for existence. The vast majority of people hold that veterinarians enjoy relatively easy lives, but for dedicated workers like Mr. Herriot, existence does not always mean comfort. From treating diseased animals to total devotion to his family, James Herriot demonstrates himself as an example of an individual who truly cherishes every living thing. The autobiography exemplifies caring for every living thing as its main theme. All humanity is obligated to be responsible for creation because mankind possesses dominion over the animals to rule and to care for them as lesser but valuable creatures. Mr. Herriot desires to share his fondness of animals and his values in understanding simple people, their work, and their relationship with their animals. James Herriot esteems his family and friends, enjoys arduous work, and treasures the natural beauty of all creation. He is convinced that humans possess an intimate relationship with animals both in work and in pleasure. Mr. Herriot does not comprehend people who mistreat animals and he deems them as lacking in proper sentiment. He despises those in veterinary practice who do not consider the customer's and animal's welfare but are controlled by self-interest and avarice. In first person glimpses through Mr. Herriot's eyes, the reader witnesses the dignity of man and his dependence upon animals. Mr. Herriot generally agrees with the other veterinarians in his field of work since the profession comprises of services tendered for the welfare of people and animals. Herriot performs his heroic labors because he understands that people value their pets as friends and companions. Veterinarians in practice for lucrative gain are not genuinely concerned for animals since their motives are perverted. This book will have a consequential impact because humans are intimately related with their animals in that they are affected both physically and emotionally. The book's persuasiveness on the importance of every living thing makes it a timeless contribution, not to the treatment of disease but to the inherent value of animals. Mr. Herriot writes the book based on his own personal experiences as a veterinarian. He polishes his memories to create humorous yet moralistic vignettes. Each story contains its own theme about living in harmony with every living being. The author questions veterinarians to examine the moral obligation they fulfill through their job. They must devote themselves sacrificially to their customers and aid them in their distresses. He also appeals to all humanity to respect animals because the animals are entrusted to humans to maintain and care for their needs. The publication is well composed because of its vivid description of life as a Yorkshire Dalesman. Colloquial language of the Yorkshire farmers is utilized to portray the common man and his relationships. The book embodies eloquence because of the manner James Herriot evidences his passionate love for animals. The author describes his relationship with his cat, ". . . she on the wall, touching noses with me, gazing into my eyes, drinking me in as though she thought I was rather wonderful and couldn't get enough of me. . ." (374). A mans intimate relationship with his pets is demonstrated by vividly expressive, graceful, and fluent personal gestures. The short vignettes are each complete with humor, morals, and character sketches. All people who delight in understanding animals will find this book accessible and enlightening. It persuades the reader to care for every living thing through ardor and wit. The first person point of view causes the book to be personal and simple in relating to everyday circumstances. The earthy nature of the book describes the incomprehensible joy of spending night and day working on stubborn, slovenly animals. The method used to tie in the theme with the title of the book highlights its greatest strength. Man's effective dominion over every living thing is evidenced in every chapter. The only weakness is attributed to the similarity that many of his stories acquire since the subject matter remains constant and only the details differ. In the end, the details are not retained but the impression the story produces poignantly remains. The book teaches the reader about the dedication to life through the continuous rigor of veterinary practice, the appalling diseases they cure, and the excessive amount of time they devote to assist animals. Mr. Herriot quotes from the Bible in his dedication, "Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." James Herriot's passion to fulfill this command consumes his entire existence. All humanity should become infected with this love of life that highlights the dignity of every living thing.

I am not a wealthy man, but I know how they live.

My grandfather Eddie was the son of Polish immigrants; he met my grandmother Dottie at the Electrolux factory in Stamford, Connecticut, where they worked, and eventually they settled in Greenwich. My father, Walter, worked for the town, trimming trees and maintaining its parks; my mother, Margie, stayed at home, raising four boys almost entirely herself. While most of the other kids at school spoke of private planes and sleep-away camps, I enjoyed my summers in the garden helping my grandfather plant flowers, or in the kitchen with my mother making pierogi. We were a close-knit family, living under one roof, holding onto our Polish traditions.

In high school, I worked at a catering company washing dishes, scrubbing floors and taking out the trash. When the holidays came and we were shortstaffed in the kitchen, I once arranged a crudité of vegetables on a grapevine sleigh with an eggplant sliced lengthwise and hollowed out for dip. It really wasn’t any different from the flower arrangements I’d help my grandfather make growing up. Soon, I started working parties at grand estates, where I passed mini crab cakes on sterling silver trays and served Beluga caviar on mother of-pearl spoons. As a caterer, I peered into the cabinets of magnificent kitchens, looking for a single pitcher, only to find a hundred. Big pitchers, little pitchers―porcelain, glass and silver. I opened drawers in butler’s pantries with more serving pieces than Buckingham Palace. Long forks with four tines and short forks with two tines. Spoons with round bowls, oval bowls and spoons with teeth. There were toast racks and teapots, samovars and soup tureens, compotes and cake stands. China came with markings and linens with letters. Every piece had a story―a history―whether handed down or happened upon in some faraway place. Of course, I owned none of these things myself and would inherit little of the sort. But in the sublime beauty of coffee served delicately in a Herend Chinese Bouquet demitasse cup, paired with a sterling silver Tiffany Audubon spoon, I glimpsed another kind of life.

Catering parties in Greenwich, I saw how the wealthy entertain. Styling homes for House Beautiful, I saw how they decorate. Oil paintings in living rooms hung splendidly over mantels flanked by cloisonné vases, Staffordshire dogs and Baccarat candlesticks. On bookcases and étagères, collections of blue-and white porcelain punctuated stacks of beautiful books. Bar carts took center stage, stocked with silver cocktail shakers, gilded tumblers, and handblown glass decanters. Lacquered trays adorned coffee tables with Venetian glass bowls and vases filled with flowers. Boxes came in brass, shagreen, tortoiseshell and alabaster. Obelisks were made of marble, malachite, lapis and agate. Chinoiserie figurines rubbed elbows with African statues. Natural curiosities lent whimsy. Crystal added glamour. Everywhere I looked, captivating combinations of furniture, textiles, art and objects told deeply personal stories of who lived there, where they’d been and what they loved. In every treasure, trinket, knickknack and artifact, there was a life well lived―and I found it at the flea market. Not all of us were born with a silver spoon in our mouths, but we can pretend, can’t we?

Sitting down and reading this book is like a guided trip through the world of design By Kathysue Sitting down and reading this book is like a guided trip through the world of design. It shows how anyone can have fine things on even a shoe string budget and how to use your purchases in an elegant and timeless manner. It is totally inspiring and makes me want to go to the nearest flea market to see what treasures I can find. It will open your eyes to a new way of looking at design and entertaining. Kudos to Eddie and Jaithan for writing such a fabulous book with amazing images. Even the book itself is done with an elegant touch, with its thick pages and the fun lead-in page on it's brightly colored paper. If you need inspiration to get out of your decorating rut, this is the book for you. Anyone can have a beautiful and elegant home if you use some Eddie's advice!!!

This book has taught me how to decorate with all of the family treasures I love while still curating my own sense of style. It will inspire you to add wild color and scout out flea markets, but also keep you honed in on classic styling elements. Such a fun lookbook, a heart warming read, and honestly a work of art in itself. Can't wait to send these as Christmas gifts!

Not to de-value or de-face your review, but I beg to differ, if u publish a crappy opinion, then I feel it is my obligation to the knife community to leave an educated, honest, experienced and positive one in rebute, in addition if your looking for training or a good shop book to read " how to make knives" FW Media is Top Notch, with that said......Joe Kertzman excellent job as usual, i look forward to this book each and every year, and still do. imo. As a full time knifemaker it is a must have, or risk getting left behind. Truly a book you must have on your coffee table religiously and current. This industry is evolving so fast now, its mind boggling how Joe and Steve keep up to date. Last years was sweet. This year's is F$#%ing awesome. I want to own 90% of the blades I see in here and I make my own for a living. AGAIN IF U LOVE KNIVES AND NEED YOUR FIX AS I DO, DONT HESITATE TO OWN THIS ANNUAL. the only thing u will regret is reading my review instead of making one for yourself. A+ , *****, and thank you big Joe for all you do in our great industry. Stay down brother. BC Cutlery....... owner/maker

By Mac Overton Like a ray of sunshine on a gloomy day By James Overton Knives 2016, 36th Edition, Krause Publications, $33, and well worth it.By Mac OvertonLike a ray of sunshine on a gloomy day, or a strike of lightning that brightens a dark sky, the latest edition of the annual Knives series arrived last week. Each edition mutually excels the previous one, due to the genius of editor Joe Kertzman. The features are amazing. They lead off with one by noted collector Les Robertson. "Buy What You Like. . . That You Can Afford." Sound adverse for anyone contemplating collecting. (I don't collect. I accumulate. Collectibles are not to be used. I don't want a knife I'd be afraid to use.)Mike Haskew offers an article on dressing up knives, "Filigree, Inlay & Pique—Hot Knife Art Trio." That is fascinating, but again, I doubt anyone would use these works of art. Then we come to the Pat Covert (I suspect a pen name) article on "Who Are These Sharp Little Runts," about small pocket knives. A book from decades ago, "The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening," was written by experts who had set up sharpening systems in meat packing plants. They said their research showed that, no matter how long the cutting edge was, most cutting was done with about an inch of the blade. This article shows that a blade does not have to be big and thick to be useful in real life.Noted knifemaker Tim Zowada contributed a fascinating piece, " World's First Bloomery Steel/Meteorite Razor?" He gives step-by-step instructions to making a straight razor out of iron sand and meteorite dust. (Sorry, I am not brave enough to shave with a straight razor. I am reminded of a late media commentator, who, it was said, hated everything so much they had to tie him up at night to keep him from slashing his own throat.)I was amazed at James Morgan Ayres' contribution, "Wares of the Old World," about the knives of Bulgaria. There, big is better, because knives instead of guns are the main protection against predators. The subtitle says it well: "Bulgarian knives are the product of a people, a place and time, and the villages and wilderness surrounding them." Wish I had one of folders shown.ABS Master Smith Wally Hayes checks in with "Color my Knife World," with advice on "Blade and handle texturing, heat coloring and other techniques set certain makers' knives apart." Any aspiring knife maker or aficionado (I used to be unable to spell that word—now I are one) needs to read this."The Three Amigos of the Buck Knives Line" is about a camp knife, hatchet and chopping froe that Buck has produced with a RED powder-coat finish, so they'll be easy to find if you drop them. From the article, I surmise they have traditional legendary Buck quality."Fix Bayonets" is a good history study, and explores how Joshua Chamberlain's ordered bayonet charge may have unfortunately determined the battle of Gettysburg for the Union.Noted maker Joe Szilaski contributes "Inspired by Old Knives in His Collection," about some of the treasures he has picked up a flea markets, yard sales, etc. I have found treasures, too. It is well worth considering.Getting into the Trends and State of the Art sections, well, there is too much to give individual attention to in this brief review.I did notice that an amazing number of makers are once again using W2 steel, and my favorite 1095C remains popular, too. And kitchen knives are getting the attention they deserve. (After all, a hunting knife may get used once a year, while a good kitchen blade will probably see use every day.)Then there are the directories, which as a writer I use often.Buy it. You won't regret it.

It has a lot of great material about both old and new knife design. Very good usage and ratio of pictures-to-text.About 1/3 of the book is an extensive list of reference material. I was pretty excited when I first saw how "hefty" the book was so I was a little disappointed to find that so much space was devoted to small print reference and not actual content about different knives.

Inspirational cross-stitch designs with Moorish, Persian, and Byzantine flair   Ottoman Empire once stretched from the Persian Gulf to the Adriatic Sea, covering much of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, and it is the inclusion of so many cultures that gives its decorative art such ornamentation. With Moorish, Persian, and Byzantine influences mixed with European folk art there is a wealth of design to choose from. This book offers beautiful repeat patterns and borders using rich jewel colors as well as styles evident in Ottoman ornamental art. The motifs work beautifully on cushions, blankets, and table linens. With easy-to-follow charts and many options of Ottoman-inspired traditional designs, this is an inspirational project book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Like the designs By EAL Beautiful designs and many remind me of Iznik tiles. I wish the charts had been done in with symbols rather than colors. Darker areas of some of the charts are more difficult to read, meaning it's harder to count the number of squares/stitches.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Better than I expected By Jane in Milwaukee Maria Diaz makes such lovely designs and as you can tell by the cover, they're complex enough to be quite beautiful but easy enough to stitch. There is only one little blurb of an introduction stuck on the inside of the front cover of this paperback. I would have appreciated a lot more history of these designs. I have learned from other books why these designs are often so beautiful but stylized instead of visual representations of flowers, etc. Perhaps it's because this is such a hot political topic right now, it is not mentioned that the Ottoman Empire is mostly Muslim. In addition to it being completely outlawed to ever show any representation of the prophet Mohammed, it's also not allowed to make realistic depictions of nature: that is God's work and not for Man to try to replicate. This is why, from ancient times, Islamic designs are glorious stylized motifs with often repeated tile designs or intricate round and square designs. There are no Ottoman Empire Michelangelos or Norman Rockwells. But for all the missing realistic portraits or landscapes, the Ottoman artist turned to beauty, complexity and color in design. I especially love the 14 designs that are shown on pages 16-29, 4 of which designs are spread over both pages when the book is laid out flat. These designed are shown stitched and you can make out that fabric is linen and mostly are stitched over 2 threads. But if you're more comfortable with Aida cloth, feel free. One thing to know is that this is not a beginner book to learn how to stitch: you're shown no techniques whatsoever and given no suggestions for fabric. DMC colors are the exclusive threads suggested and every pattern incorporates between 3 and 8 colors of floss for the cross stitching with sometimes 1 or 2 colors for back stitching. The patterns are very clear graphs with gridlines and it's extremely helpful that all the color symbols match the color of floss. The best way to stitch any but the smallest project would be to print a copy of the pattern and mark it off as you stitch it. For patterns that cover more than one page, I will copy them and tape them together...it's just easier to count them out in that way.All in all, this is a very pretty book. You could use these patterns to make anything from a simple traditional prayer rug to a picture frame to repeated patterns on hand towels or table linens. I enjoy just paging through these designs, it really gets my creative juices flowing.

I think these are even more intricate designs than #2 has. All are different from the #2 book, which I also have. These books are great for coloring with neon pens or pastel markers, lighter colors definitely.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. In 3D Technology in Fine Art and Craft By Lawrence This is a remarkable book, for a remarkable time in the arts, by a sculptor and writer uniquely suited to the task. In 3D Technology in Fine Art and Craft: Exploring 3D Printing, Scanning, Sculpting, and Milling, Bridgette Mongeon undertakes the prodigious task of providing a broad overview, and up-close examination, of the 3D digital scanning, sculpting, and printing tools (software and hardware) which are revolutionizing the traditional techniques of sculpture: armature building, hand modeling, pointing up enlargement, and investment casting. With her twenty years of experience in figurative sculpture; a Master of Fine Arts degree in combining 3D Technology and Fine Arts from Goddard College; and hands on practice with many of the digital tools she discusses, Mongeon manages to bridge the old and new in sculpture. While an enthusiastic advocate of these new tools, with their power and versatility, she is sensitive to the appeal of hand craft: its grounding in the manipulation of physical material, with all the sensory richness which pertains to this, and she recognizes the trade offs. Her effort, in this book, is to show how the two can be integrated in a sculptor's work flow. She is frank about the difficulties sculptors are likely to encounter in learning the new digital tools, but just as frank in showing, by example, how liberating these tools can be. Though 3D Technology in Fine Art and Craft is solidly technical, it is not simply a manual. The hard information of text is illuminated by how it's done sequences of photographs, and numerous other photographs of the incredible—no, astounding--sculptures and architectural constructions, large and small, created by some of the most creative digital artists in the world. Indeed, with its large format and pleasing layout, 3D Technology in Fine Art and Craft can be a delightful coffee-table book. The final chapter, on the subject of patents and intellectual property rights, provides interesting historical background, and sections on the Orphan Works Act and Fair Use, which are highly pertinent. The physical book itself is wonderfully complemented by Mongeon's excellent and wide-ranging website, www.digitalsculpting.net. I found her podcasts especially interesting, even exhilarating. In these podcasts, she interviews pioneering artists, engineers, and service bureaus working at the cutting edge of the revolution in sculpture. As certain of these artists and engineers point out, 3D digital tools have been around--and have been experimented with--for decades. But it is only within the past few years, due to the dissemination of various user-friendly 3D modeling tools available for free download, and the availability of affordable 3D scanning and 3D printing devices, that their use has exploded, creating a second wave revolution, and it is into this great current of new activity, that Mongeon has set her book afloat, like a lighted buoy. I was cheered by the fine quote from Erwin Hauer which Mongeon chose to begin Chapter Two, A World Turned Upside Down: It is an important token reminder for the younger generation and their tutors, that above and beyond the abundance of electronic marvels, the human vision and imagination remains the most important element, and that its nurture should not be replaced by excessive reliance on devices. In short, 3D Technology in Fine Art and Craft is a marvelous book, which has the specificity and breadth to appeal to professional artists and engineers, and novices alike. It is encompassing, and yet accessible, and fills a wide gap, bridging old and new ways of making, and conceiving of, sculpture.

By Robert Peters I've been 3D modeling for over 15 years and 3D printing for two so I feel like I know a great deal about both topics. Having that much experience in both areas the last place I look for new information to help me through my journey is a book as they rarely have what I need and are outdated rather quickly. THIS book on the other had is the rare masterpiece that comes along and opens your eyes to new possibilities and kick starts your motivation to create new things. This book has it all. Whether your new to the subject or a veteran there is so much great content you're sure to find something that will blow you away. It is both well thought out and organized so I know where to go when I need to go there. Buy this book...period. It's worth it just for the resources/ web links alone. Shoot, even just buy the book if you love fine art. The artists/ photos in it are simply breathtaking.
