Invaluable Resource for Practicing Meditation with Children By Mom Having dealt with high anxiety for much of my life, I have been overjoyed to find that meditation helps me to feel safe and calm, and to think clearly to distinguish between imagined threats and real threats. It has allowed me to open myself up to new experiences and to let go of the idea that if I can't be perfect, I shouldn't bother to try. My oldest son has demonstrated similar qualities since he was a toddler - he has been more than a little hesitant to try new things and slow to make friends. Like any good mom, I turned to the internet for help ;) I was lucky to find Lorraine's first book, Calm Kids. I loved the book so much that I decided to sign up for her course to teach meditation to children. Calm Kids is a great resource, but Lorraine's latest book, Connected Kids goes so much deeper. It is an invaluable resource for various types of meditation, how to use various tools like mudras, mandalas, and labyrinths, and why they are helpful. It also includes medical research and the proven the benefits of meditation for everyone - not just those with special needs. This book truly is wonderful for the general population, but Lorraine's detailed work on challenges that people with autism face and several specific balancing mindful activities make this the best book that I have seen for helping kids feel their best. For example, if a child cannot tolerate the food on his plate, she suggests practicing a gratitude meditation before eating where the caregiver and child explore the journey of the food to the plate (imagine the food growing as a plant and thanking sun, soil, water, as well as the farmer who cared for it, etc.) Kids become less afraid of unfamiliar foods and textures as they think about the effort involved in getting the food from a seed in the ground all the way to their plates - I've seen this work in my own home! I also love how at the end of each chapter, she asks the reader to check in with a centering thought for his or her own meditation practice. Having grounded children begins with having grounded caregivers. This is an excellent read with practical steps to follow (and also tips on how to advance to sensing what the child needs by having an open heart and mind rather than a strict plan to follow) - great for helping kids with special needs, as well as everyone else.

I have one daughter on the autism spectrum (high functioning) , a son who was adopted and has special needs and work at a Children's Hospital. I 've found something useful in the book for each of the people of I love!

The Final Over is a fitting tribute to the cricketers of 1914 By Vincent Wilfrid Home Lorimer I commend this book to all those interested in English cricket and the disruptive effects of the Great War on English society in 1914. Beyond this, The Final Over is a fitting tribute to the sacrifice our forefathers made in that bitter conflict.Sandford traces the abbreviated season of first class matches as an entry point to the lives and fates of the men who played in them. Too often, those lives and potentials are terminated abruptly in mud and tears. For a few, early cricketing triumphs dissipate into depression and despair. Most players survive, however, into old age replete with memories of cricketing glory. At the going down of the sun, it is stumps and we will remember them.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Book about the art of growing plants without soil. By John C. David I planted a lot of herbs and hung them by the kitchen window. Herbs are quite difficult to grow and maintain because they are too sensitive. I always have to be careful every time I water them because too little or too much water could harm their growth. Though it was not mentioned that hydroponic method can also be applied to herbs, the DIY Hydroponic Window Garden system is something I know I can do and will be very beneficial to my plants. This book gave me good information about hydroponics and its basics, however, a few illustrations could have made it a little more helpful especially for people who does not have any idea about unconventional gardening. The art of hydroponics is very interesting, if this gardening system interests you, you will be able to learn more about it using this book.

I'm a very amateur gardener and I only have one plant: a peace lily. What drew me to this topic is that I heard hydroponics can be used indoors. Much to my satisfaction, the author shows that this can succeed in urban apartments, which is my exact situation! She gives various DIY methods on how to start hydroponics. Coupled with this is a lot of background information into the history and benefits of the hobby. In some cases, I wish the author went more in depth. For example, she mentions that we can deter spider mites with a cayenne pepper spray solution, yet she doesn't go into how to make it. Overall this was a satisfying introduction into hydroponics. I would highly suggest pictures to be included with the instructions though.

This is the first time I have learned about this way to grow a plant and I am so happy I encountered this book. I've always been fascinated with the idea of gardening but I just don't have any space for it. Now with this new knowledge, I can grow plants even in the small limited spaces of my home.The instructions on how to set this up are very detailed and I really appreciate that the author suggested different fruits and vegetables that can and cannot grow in a Hydroponic Garden. This would be very helpful for beginners like me who would like to try Hydroponic Gardening and be successful the first time around. Try out this new method of gardening and you might develop a new hobby that will be worthy of your time.

If you were not previously a total lover of the technique of wire wrapping in your jewelry making, after reading this excellent book by Kimberly Sciaraffa Berlin, you most definitely will be! The beauty and the quality of the author's designs are matched by her marvelous ability to show the reader how to create these designs. Via wonderful photos and clear explanations, you can tackle these designs, step by step, even if you are a beginner. And you will love this journey into fascinating and beautiful designs!Kimberly Sciaraffa Berlin is a great teacher. More than that, she makes incredibly gorgeous jewelry. Some of the inspirations and influences for her, which she mentions in this book, Handcraft Wire Jewelry, come from ancient art, nature, and Alexander Calder. According to what I read in the book, she feels that Calder's jewelry creations "have inspired her to think and design without limit".The reader will immediately grasp how the freedom of the author's philosophy imbues wonderful movement and life into her jewelry designs. They are exceptional.There is a sense of joy which infuses every page of this book.The thirty two designs offered afford the reader easy to understand starting points complete with beautiful finishing touches. These designs can also be broken down into components. These then can be interchanged to suit the reader's own taste. If you like one aspect of one of the designs, and you like another clasp taught elsewhere in the book, for example, it is easy to alter the projects to make each of them your very own. As the author states in her introduction, "These projects are a jumping off place for your creativity and offer you the opportunity to personalize all of your pieces". She also suggests that the reader "use the gallery of more ideas following each project for inspiration to adapt and modify any of the projects". When you make jewelry,a concept like this is very freeing. It will give you countless ways of changing your style, once you learn the basics taught here.Handcraft Wire Jewelry opens with the author's introduction and proceeds to cover the materials, beads and tools you will need for wire work. Then there is a section called "basics" which is an excellent primer for the neophyte wire worker. I thought this was very complete and well done. I love her tips! Also, as was previously stated, the photographs in this book are excellent. They are not only stunning, they help immensely when the intent is to teach. You can really see what you need to do because of the step out photos.The projects themselves are really exceptional. If you like wire, and love the look of antiquity, you will find some projects that will particularly resonate with you. The "beaded double spiral chain" is one I noted that would have looked as grand on an ancient princess as it will look on you. It is flat out gorgeous, combining spiraled wire with jump rings and 8mm donut shaped disk beads in royal purple. I loved the additional ideas for this chain, which include a pendant you will flip for, and a complete change in look when the wire is switched from silver to copper, and moody chalcedony replaces the beads. There is also a bracelet shown made using the same principles, which showcases the spirals in a double chain flanking black crystals, which is stunning. In conjunction with this project, you also learn how to make a spiral beaded clasp, and a double connector clasp with a spiral hook (very suitable, as is suggested, for the bracelet described earlier).If you are into a more modern look, try the "front drilled onyx circle pendant". As the author says, "I wanted to replicate the round shape of the large onyx bead in the round chain link". This lovely link necklace is quite streamlined. It would look pretty on you as you browse among the art galleries in downtown New York.Any of the jewelry you make from Handcraft Wire Jewelry will take you anywhere. I particularly liked one of the extra ideas offered to go along with the round chain. The author uses a top drilled piece of unpolished kyanite, a stone I am very fond of for its lovely blue tones. She adds lampworked beads in two different hues of green to make this necklace sing of the forest and its wildness. It is so pretty!When you love hearts, but you don't want "cute", head over to the very hip "heart's fancy woven bead drop" project. It is influenced by the heart shape, especially where the pendant and the chain meet, as well as in the wonderful heart clasp. However there is no overwhelming overload concerning the heart theme going on here. It is by far one of the coolest heart necklaces I have ever seen. And yes, there is February's birthstone, the amethyst, featured in the jawdroppingly beautiful pendant and in the stunning chain too. Be your own Valentine and make this for yourself! I love it and so will you!To teach yourself further technique in a really worthwhile way, try the "top drilled no frame pendant". As the author says, "Just about any top-drilled bead works well with this project". As it is a wonderful project with a gorgeous result, your time will be well spent. I was transported by the manner in which the wire is coiled and woven to reflect the earthy beauty of the stone pendant which was chosen for this project. Once you teach yourself how to make this pendant, you will be inspired by the selection of stones shown as alternate ideas to make this curvy, woven, spiraled pendant over and over again. This is an outstanding design you will adore if your taste leans toward the unique and beautiful.At the end of the book, the reader is offered a section on advanced wireweaving techniques. I really appreciated the further insight I was able to get from this section. I also liked the weaving tips and the notes on creating patterns.Handcraft Wire Jewelry: Chains Clasps Pendants, by Kimberly Sciaraffa Berlin fairly hums with delightful beauty. Share in the positive energy and make sure you don't miss this treasure of a jewelry design book!

By Jean Leslie Every project in this book is well written with clear step-by-step instructions and inspiring photography. The book has plenty of photography of variations of each project. The wire-wrapped pendants combine classic wire sculpture with wire weaving. There's also a nice selection of hand-crafted findings. However, the strength of this book is the selection of hand-crafted chains - nine of them. Most books about chain making is either chain maille (which I enjoy) or requires soldering. There's not even a simple 1-in 1 which is the foundation of chain mail design. The chains alone make this a great addition to the jewelry-maker's library.

Sutton This book may not have the most beautiful book cover on the shelf, but page for page it's definitely one of the most informative and useful books on the subject of wire weaving. I am what I consider an intermediate wire weaver and for me, these patterns and instructions are well written and easily understood. Packed with options and many different chain styles to accent your pendants, this book delivers everything your imagination could want.I had a whole stack to look at at the bookstore (remember those?) and this is the one I brought home. I highly recommend it!

Mofardin If I you've never owned a puppy this is a simple easy to understand training guide, however a German Shepherd is a complex intelligent breed and needs a bit more than basic training. I am an experienced GS owner but it's been a few years since we owned one and I wanted a refresher. This book was OK but I'll be searching for a bit more.

Well Structured Comprehensive Informative Guidebook to Rabbit Care By Atom Brownstein I found this book to be an excellent guide for anyone who is thinking about or considering getting a rabbit. It is a well written comprehensive guide about all the things a person needs to know and consider before they make the decision to get a rabbit as a pet. The book is well organized into clearly structured sections and even organized to include a table of contents about where to find what information you want to know more about.I really like how it informs the readers about how a rabbit is a big commitment and that rabbits can live for ten years or more. Most people don't know that rabbits as pets is a longterm commitment, and that having a pet rabbit typically costs the owner thousands of dollars in veterinary costs. I think this is a great book because it provides all the things someone should consider before making the decision to get a pet rabbit. Most of the general population are predisposed to the conception that rabbits are a low cost and low work but this book gives people the facts about how much time, and money is required for proper rabbit care. I think this is a great read for people thinking about buying rabbits since it is almost Easter, which is when many people buy rabbits on impulse, and soon abandon them to an animal shelter or worse. I voulenteer at my local animal shelter to help provide care for all of the abandoned bunnies when I can, and I also donate to support the rabbits at my local animal shelter.This book is an excellent source for anyone who has a pet rabbit or is considering adopting a rabbit. It provides all the facts about rabbit care as well which I thought was really great. It has chapters like cage and rabbit home, and has chapters on everything from behavior of rabbits to what kinds of toys to get and even the types of litter. I think this book is a really great reference guide that every rabbit owner should be able to use when ever they wonder about what kinds of things rabbits need and how to take care of them. As I am writing this review I an ad for the Cadbury Bunny just came on my TV.Long story short, if you are thinking about getting a pet rabbit, or you are already a rabbit owner I recommend getting this guide because its always a good thing to have a reference on hand. I also found this book really easy to understand because it was written in a simple way that everyone can easily understand and read. I also really like how it is broken into specific chapters so I can easily access the specific things I want to know more about.I received this product on a promotional discount for my unbiased and honest review. The book also includes pictures of different kinds of rabbits which is great for readers like me who want to know what makes all the breeds so different. Lots of great knowledge in this book, but also grammatical errors.Page numbers are weird because I am using the Kindle, it says the book has over 900 pages."They are great pets Whether you live in a house or an apartment" this is in the first paragraph in the introduction. The book contains random words that are capitalized."Because rabbits have eyes on the side of their hear, rather than the front. They can see behind them even without turning their heads!" third paragraph under the introduction. That first sentence cannot stand on its own."Do use chemicals, this can harm your rabbit, White vinegar mixed with water works great!""What do I do I find Maggots on my rabbit or in my litter box?""If it is more serious bite, it might more of an aggression thing"

By SB I weave, knit, sew but crochet has always confused me! I am in the process of making the caravan and so far I am feeling confident about crocheting! I am living and traveling in a camper/caravan so this project is especially fun. I am in the US and here's what I am using: Grace by Patons which is a mercerized cotton.; tacky glue for construction; sugar & cream cotton for interior accessories. I will be consulting the author's errata page because I can't figure out how and when to attach the front but other than that the directions have been excellent. Thank you, Kate Burning for getting me crocheting at last!

Review What a fantastic book... There are some duplicates between the girls and boys book, but enough differences you'll want both. (Lisa Day Inside Toronto 2015-10-28)Vidaling's playful books focus on exploring creativity with children through commonplace items, such as found natural objects, food, cardboard, and upcycled materials. Both volumes (Reviewed with How To Amaze Your Daughter) include a number of activities, crafts, and simple experiments perfect for a rainy afternoon or a parent-child playdate. Adults may remember some of these projects from grade school... The directions are simple enough for older children to follow on their own, and parents won't be frustrated with the projects or the results (but some may get a little messy). Though the two books are divided by gender, and each contains projects that are stereotypically geared toward boys or girls, most of the projects are gender-neutral or easy to adapt to suit any child's interests... Parent-child craft books are popular, and the projects in these books are appropriate for a wide range of age levels, from preschoolers to tweens. Introduction

"All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." This sentence is Picasso's. But what is an artist? Someone who looks at the world with a curious eye, gifted with a creativity that transforms raw material into poetry? Yes, children have this talent, this perpetual wonder that makes them enthusiastic for new experiences, capable of investing themselves in a little project with as much enthusiasm and seriousness as they would if their life depended on it: making soap bubbles or paper airplanes, tying a remote-control motor to a stuffed animal on wheels, or making a skirt of flowers to put around a little doll. Playing is about inventing, testing, letting your imagination and concrete experiences rub up against one another. And, in the end, it's about growing as well. Only while growing up, we sometimes lose our open mind. We throw out bottle caps without seeing the possibility of them being wheels: we no longer pick up feathers on the sidewalk. Sometimes, even, we forget to sculpt volcanoes in our mashed potatoes! That is, we forget unless we have the chance to have children of our own, who remind us not to neglect the most important things: play, fantasy and making wonderful things for the sake of making something wonderful!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun Book for Boys and Their Parent(s) By Tim Drake I had hoped that this book might be a good one for my 12-year-old son and I. I do like the book, but feel that many of the crafts, recipes, and experiments are geared for a slightly younger age. The book is brimming with 50 fun, exciting, and creative projects that you can do together. I like that idea - the concept of bonding with your son, especially for fathers and sons. The great thing about these is that they're inexpensive and they're also easy - a big plus. You also don't have to go out in search of pvc pipe or plumber's glue and other odd items. Most of these can be done with things you already have in your home - like matches, potatoes, etc. You and your son will enjoy learning new things as you perform magic tricks, create cool recipes, and conduct fun science experiments. This really feeds into a boy's innate sense of curiosity and will be a big hit with boys between the ages of 5-10.

By C'est Moi I have both this book and the "How to Amaze Your Daughter" version, and while both have their merit I like this one slightly less. The book has instructions for cutesy little projects and experiments. There are some you can do together, decorations, things that can be played with, some are "experiments", and some can be eaten.Though the boy and girl versions differ in a lot of ways, both have a few experiments/crafts in common, such as: kokedama hanging Japanese gardens (pictures vary but directions are identical), round candleholders (wax for girls an ice for boys), moon phases made from Oreos (exactly the same), and more. I'm actually glad I got both because there are plenty of projects that both boys and girls could like. The experiments and recipes especially seem like they could go either way.In each book I found about the same amount of projects that I love and I know my daughter will too, but between the two this one has more duds. Some ideas that I don't like include: "A Drum Kit Made from Small Tin Cans" because it involves opened metal cans and their tops, which can get rusted and possibly cut kids; "A Ball Forest with Surprises Inside", which would have you put sticks from outside into homemade snacks (kind of unsanitary imo, plus may have pesticides, insects, etc.); and "A Mobile Made of Cheese Doilies to Eat with No Hands" because it involves putting thin metal wires into food, which can go badly with kids. Then again, there are a lot of good ideas overall. I'd recommend getting both books if you have boys and girls, but I still prefer the other one.

Fun Craft Book for Boys AND Girls By Katherine Chan With both a son and a daughter in the house, I thought it very fitting to have the opportunity to review both How to Amaze Your Son and How to Amaze Your Daughter. Both books are chock full of fun activities to do with your kids, and while the books specify "how to amaze your son/daughter", I found that many of the activities in both books were fairly gender neutral and would work for both boys and girls. That said, there were some obvious differences where I can see the author trying to categorize the books specifically for boys or girls.There is only one completely repeated activity from the How To girls version in this book, and the activities. The single activity that is exactly the same with the same photo art and instructions is the final activity in the book - The Phases of the Moon made from sandwich cookies. There is some overlap in activities, such as the Art of Kokedama, the tee pee, the house under the table, and the ice wreath/archaeologists' ice floe, but I can safely say that most of the activities are completely different. I've included the table of contents below if you're interested in seeing what exactly is in the book.One big difference between the boys and girls version of this book is that the girls version features a lot of doll activities while the boys features activities that involve fire. I don't recall any fire activities in the girl's book, and there certainly were no mentions of dolls in the boys book. This was a little off putting, but I think the author was trying to aim for the majority here - many girls do like dolls and many boys like fire I guess. That was probably my only gripe with these books - but that said, there are a lot of activities in the boys book which some would categorize as "girl activities" such as sewing (shark pencil case) and baking (all the many cakes), and there were many activities in the girls book that would some would categorize as "boy activities" such as playing with rubber eggs or performing magic tricks (water upside down trick). I let my kids know that the title of the book meant nothing - it probably would have done the author good to simply name the books "How to Amaze Your Kids, book 1 and 2".The Sons book had one activity that I felt should have been removed from the list - the Drum Set made from small tin cans. Activity has one part where you're to make cymbals from the cut lids of tin cans. Now I don't know about you, but I cut myself on a tin an edge before and it hurts like crazy. If your kid tries to make, or is playing with this drum set, chances are they'll get hurt.The activities in the book were overall very good - the difficulty level ranged from very simple to "you will probably be making most of the project". We tried out a few and both kids really enjoyed the projects. The book is full of beautiful photographs and simple, but accurate, instructions. Many of the items to complete the projects you can find in your house and don't require special purchases. This is actually quite a nice book to add to the craft shelf.
