Farmers are happy people By Bridgeman Elkin I love healthy food and lifestyle and the idea of making a small farm at my backyard sounds perfect to me. I have bought this book to get properly prepared for that. It offers useful references for preparing a nutrient-rich soil and the different kinds of vegetables I can grow on my own. And, as it is said in this book, farmers are happy people, which is a great truth. I am sure than when I start gardening, I'd feel more peaceful and calm.

At the same time, he ominously predicted, “If there ever are great revolutions there, they will be caused by the presence of the blacks upon American soil. That is to say, it will not be the equality of social conditions but rather their inequality which may give rise thereto.” De Tocqueville was prescient, because the longest battle fought in the history of the United States has been the Civil Rights Movement. The framers of the Constitution kicked the problem down the road, over half a million died during the Civil War to end slavery, and then many more fought and died to dismantle segregation and legalized racism in the 100 years after. It goes without saying that Jim Crow was pervasive in the wake of the Civil War, but few events in history put the effects of institutionalized segregation and racism on display like the case of the Scottsboro Boys, a group of black teenagers accused of raping two young white girls on a train. When the girls made the accusation, the teens were nearly lynched by an angry mob, only to be dragged almost immediately into court and given a sham trial that inevitably ended in a conviction by an all-white jury and death sentences for 8 of the 9 boys. In the wake of the quick trial, the case was appealed by outsiders on behalf of the boys, and though Alabama’s Supreme Court affirmed almost all the convictions, the attention raised nearly every potential issue implicating criminal procedure among the states. While the Bill of Rights had ensured a number of rights for criminal defendants, the states had previously been allowed to interpret those rights, leading to instances where defendants weren’t provided adequate legal representation. The case of the Scottsboro Boys compelled the U.S. Supreme Court to order new trials in Powell v. Arizona (1932), which went a long way to determining and codifying some of the rights of criminal defendants in state courts. However, even after one of the girls recanted her testimony during retrials, the Scottsboro Boys were still found guilty, leading to more appeals and yet another Supreme Court ruling ordering retrials. Eventually, some of the boys were cleared of charges, but several still ended up serving time in prison, and it would not be until 80 years after the controversial case that Alabama posthumously pardoned the defendants who hadn’t been cleared of all charges. To this day, the case remains synonymous with the injustice of Jim Crow and the manner in which African Americans were deprived of basic civil rights, and historian Wayne Flynt may have put it best when he summed up the case and its aftermath: “I think that's perhaps an ultimate tragedy. People pulled into history who never wanted to be pulled into history suddenly put on a national platform, and tragically paraded out for everybody's benefit but their own. And the question of who really cared about them, who really defended them? Almost everyone had an agenda that involved the Scottsboro Boys. A quick brief description of the Scottsboro boys and their trial By Modupe Hendricks The best thing about the book Jim Crow On Trial: The History and Legacy of the Notorious Case of the Scottsboro Boys is the bibliography. The book was concise and explained an era that took place over 80 years ago. I still find it amazing that a white woman could claim rape by a group of men and not have a mark on her, and the jury believed her. The book did have copies of some of the letters that the young men sent to their relatives and supporters. The description of the trials provided in the book clearly demonstrated the trials were a farce. At least this book provides a brief description of the Scottsboro boys and their trial. In addition, the ultimate fates of the young men is provided at the end. The book is a quick read but may boil the blood of some readers.

About the Author

Gail Pope is the Founder and President of BrightHaven Animal Sanctuary, Rescue, and Hospice (www.brighthaven.org) in northern California near Santa Rosa. For more than two decades, her focus has been on helping senior and special needs animals on a journey of holistic healing, all the way through hospice care and transition. She has also created a comprehensive education program for caregivers to realize these options for their own animals.

Born and educated in Harrow, England, Gail’s early career path included investment banking and the airline industry before her relocation to the United States in 1986. Living in Southern California, Gail was employed as personal assistant to actress Stefanie Powers and by the William Holden Wildlife Foundation, afterwards forming her own travel agency with daughter Kirstie. The agency was sold three years later when Gail, after a life-changing revelation, decided to form an animal rescue organization. She then worked for several years with veterinarian Dr. Douglas Coward to gain experience suited to her new direction.

Since 1991, Gail’s work in the world of animal healthcare and hospice has been widely acclaimed. Gail primarily employs classical veterinary homeopathy in the care of her animals and is a certified Animal Reiki teacher. By petra lindros My friend told me to read this book, once I started I couldn't put it down. It's very well written and I particularly like the life histories of the animals featured in the book. I live in Spain and it's not easy to find resources like this on hospice care for animals. This book has lots of great information.

This book made it easier for me to decide to "go natural" and I was able to read the end signs a bit better and make him comfortable - staying with him right up to the end. The first doggie passing that didn't leave me feeling guilty. The book helped.

Caring for older animals should come with a different instruction manual. Well, this is it!Filled with many suggestions for the best hospice care you can offer, including working with your veterinarian regarding your decision to let your pet pass at home, finding holistic practitioners, and preparing yourself, your family and your pet.This book does NOT advocate abandonment of veterinary care. Far from it. But it does suggest that when the end is near, regardless of the form it took to reach the last days, perhaps you can give love and care and let the death journey be a sacred time.Many people feel that their beloved animal must be euthanized when it has reached the end, but dying is a natural process that doesn't always require the use of the euthanasia drug. Death is the natural exchange of energy. If you can keep your animal clean and free of suffering, then just BE with him or her. What a wonderful gift you'll be giving your friend and yourself.

About the Author Given her attraction to nature while growing up, it’s no surprise Rosemary Levesque studied biological sciences, secondary education, and art at the University of New Hampshire. By Janine S This book, along with Rosemary's insight to a natural approach to healing my dog's health has improved his life on so many different levels. Since reading this book and implementing her recommendations, my dog has increased energy levels, no longer has issues with an upset stomach, hasn't had an ear infection, no longer scratches due to being itchy all the time, isn't drinking water compulsively, seems generally happier, and astonishingly enough, his season flank alopecia that left him with two large, dry and flaky bald spots on his back, seems to be resolving and in only a couple months, his fur has started to grow back. Every day, we are astonished at the changes we continue to see with him, and my only regret is not reading this book sooner.

By Judith Auslander Rosemary has written a warm, friendly, easy to read book on how to care for your pet from puppyhood (kittenhood) to adult. It is especially useful for those pets that are aging or ill. This book could save your beloved pets life. Since I have a puppy, this book helped me to know how to start out my puppy's health out right by providing her from the very beginning with a healthy diet and so much more. Hopefully, my pup will not ever suffer from a disease because she is starting out eating a healthy diet that is natural and wholesome. No fillers for my Riley girl. I highly suggest you read this book if you are, like me, in love with your pet.

Her insight and knowledge of essential oils, zeolites and other supplements is valuable information you won't find anywhere else. Rosemary helped me with my dog which was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and this information was essential in her healing for the past 11 months. I was so thrilled that Rosemary wrote this book and she also has a great website with so much great information if your looking for natural ways to care for your pet and help them live as long as possible!

I think I am going to pass saying that this is made to know for basics but yet, it has full of amazing deals like pro. Having this ultimate guide book made my life easier. By Barb Klosinski As a retired teacher, my philosophy is that each one of us has a leadership role, of some sort, in our daily lives - be it in our neighbourhood, community, church or in our own family life. Brenda Oliver's book, The Freedom Challenge, brings valuable and useful information which can be put to work immediately. It touches personal situations across a broad spectrum including business and corporate environmental behaviours. I took notes and wrote down special places to reread and reread. The Summons is just excellent, meaningful and personal. The entire book is filled with gems to make the reader think deeply. Terrific, wonderful, fabulous. I loved it!

In her book There's Been a Change of Plans, Koko takes the devastation of a surprise midlife divorce and turns it on its head to hilarious effect. She doesn’t skirt around the pain involved, but that’s not where she lives. She lives in the getting on with life. With writing that snaps, crackles and pops off the page, Koko takes readers on an immensely enjoyable ride through the trials and triumphs of sudden singledom. Reading this book is like having a conversation with your best friend—if your best friend happens to be witty, wise and thoroughly entertaining. Fortunately for her readers, Amy Koko is!

I couldn't put it down. The story's antagonist, "Mark" demonstrates how men's brains actually function. Amy is able to capture the the invisible yet undeniable link between a man's brain and penis. Much like Peter Pan's shadow, Mark and his penis act independently of one another at times even though they share the same body (magnificent body I may add). In the end, Shakespeare ain't got nothing on Amy Koko! If you haven't read this book, you should. If you haven't bought this book for your library, here is your chance, now is your time!

I can just imagine the encouragement this would bring to someone just starting their new journey as a single person. This book also makes a happily married person appreciate their spouse in a new way.

For a book on finding your purpose of course, that is ideal.But you'd be surprised if you read other books on Amazon how they seem to drone on without any semblance of usable advice. I do read a lot of books, and this is a cut above others. There are very clear takeaways and the book is all about actually helping you, not just telling you what you probably already know + background crap.Focusing on the HOW is 100x more important than the WHY - you picked up this book because you already know WHY you were drawn to it.

In fact you’re suppose to feel lost as your life and your purpose will change many times over. What this book does well is give you the tools to help you find your purpose any time you feel like you’ve lost it. Highly recommended!

You can find the same type of content by searching on Google. With that said this book is a refreshing read because you are given a glimpse into the author’s struggles and how he was able to find his way by overcoming obstacles. It’s a good 2-4 hour read which is what I prefer.

About the Author Traer Scott is an award-winning fine art and commercial photographer and the bestselling author of several books, including Nocturne, Shelter Dogs and Newborn Puppies (Chronicle Books, 2013). Her work has been featured in National Geographic, Life, Vogue, O, and dozens of other major national and international publications. Scott was the recipient of the 2010 Helen Woodward Humane Award for animal welfare activism. She resides in Providence, Rhode Island with her family and teaches animal photography at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

The Beauty and Pathos of Shelter Dogs By Yim Finding Home: Shelter Dogs and Their StoriesI have worked with Traer professionally and can attest to the acute connection that she makes with her canine photographic subjects. Clearly, she has been a dog in a past life and I say this with absolute conviction and only the highest regard for that quality. Without sentimentality or anthropomorphology, Traer is able to capture the essence of the spirit of the dogs she photographs. In many instances, that spirit has been considerably dampened but somehow she is able to find the pathos and latent generosity inherent in each dog. Beyond the beauty and reality of the portraits, is her accompanying text. Without blame or grandstanding, Traer presents the facts of shelter life and how both dogs and rescue volunteers are hanging on hope. Will we see an end to pet overpopulation in our lifetime? With perspectives such as those of Traer Scott's, we may just see real progress.

By Angela Nelson Kalo Traer Scott's book Finding Home comes a decade after her book Shelter Dogs. She strikes the same note of poignancy in her photos, but now we hear more of the dogs' stories. Traer chose five dogs to follow from their surrender at the shelter through adoption, and her words provide the abstract to her haunting photos. In her photos, the souls of these dogs are seen through their eyes. I fell in love with Roman and Sophia, but all of the dogs of Finding Home will touch your heart. The best thing about this book is what an advocate Traer is for shelter rescue and adoption. She dispels many myths about shelter adoption. The other best thing about the book is that a percentage of all proceeds will be donated to Handsome Dan's Rescue and Providence Animal Rescue League.

I have a 9 year old Lab/Rhodesian Ridgeback named George who was a shelter dog, that no one wanted. Every time someone would come up to his cage he would snap at them. Until there was me. Shelter Dogs and their stories are always fascinating to me. This book has a permanent place on my coffee table.
